Serie A history

Serie A has always been a league that takes itself very seriously. Football is barely less important than religion in Italy, and the league reflects that. It began life in 1897 as the Italian Football Championship, which was structured on a regional basis, with winners going into a play-off to decide the champions. A strict league format was introduced in 1929, when it became known as Serie A.
