Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek faces a huge test of his "play or perish" directive to World Cup hopefuls after national team skipper Craig Moore cut short his contract with Greek club AO Kavala.

Moore returned to Brisbane on Thursday, saying his body needed a rest after his three-month stint in Greece.
