Onyewu knee surgery scheduled

CHICAGO -- American defender Oguchi Onyewu will have surgery Wednesday to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee, an injury sustained during last week's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

The U.S. Soccer Federation said Monday that national team physician Dr. Bert Mandelbaum will operate on Onyewu in Los Angeles. The timeframe for Onyewu's recovery will be determined after surgery.
