Patenaude credited with first World Cup hat trick

ZURICH, Switzerland -- It comes 76 years later, but American soccer player Bert Patenaude is finally getting official credit as the first person to score a hat trick in a World Cup match.

Previous records gave Guillermo Stabile of Argentina credit for the first World Cup hat trick, but FIFA said Friday that Patenaude should hold the title "by virtue of his three goals in the USA's 3-0 win over Paraguay in Montevideo (Uruguay) on 17 July 1930."
