Midfielder led United to win over Metros

NEW YORK -- D.C. United midfielder Christian Gomez, who scored two goals in the team's 3-2 victory over the MetroStars, was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week on Monday.

After the MetroStars opened a 1-0 lead, the 29-year-old Gomez scored twice in an eight-minute stretch Sunday as United passed its Eastern Conference rival for the second seed in the MLS Cup playoffs.

It is the first Player of the Week award for Gomez, who signed with the club August 14 from Argentina.
