Bruins elevate assistant to top post

LOS ANGELES -- Jorge Salcedo, a UCLA assistant since 2001, was named head coach of the men's soccer team Friday.

Salcedo played for the Bruins from 1990-93, and his penalty kick was the decisive score when they won the 1990 NCAA championship game. He was a ball boy for UCLA in 1985, when the Bruins won their first national title.

He went on to play in the MLS for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
