Both players win award for first time

CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan and Abby Wambach were named U.S. Soccer's 2003 athletes of the year Thursday. Both are first-time winners.

Donovan, a 21-year-old striker, was the leading scorer for the U.S. Men's National Team and his MLS team, the San Jose Earthquakes.

He had seven goals and five assists for the national squad including four-goal performance against Cuba last July. He had 12 goals and six assists for the Earthquakes.
