Smith had cancer

BOSTON -- Todd Smith, who was treated for leukemia while general manager of the New England Revolution in 2002, had died at 38.

He died Wednesday at Brigham and Women's Hospital, the team said.

Smith resigned at the end of the 2002 season in which the Revolution reached the MLS Cup final. In 2003, the team had its first winning record before losing in the Eastern Conference final.
