CARY, N.C. -- As a young soccer coach, North Carolina's Anson Dorrance wondered why Dean Smith went out of his way to talk up defense over offense.

``He never complimented any of the attacking personalities on his team,'' Dorrance said Thursday of Smith, the former Hall of Fame basketball coach of the Tar Heels.

``If Michael Jordan scored 25 points and totally dominated, you never really saw him address that. All of his comments were about guys who played great defense,'' ...
