US Women's Soccer League bites dust

NEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The Women's United Soccer Association - the sport's top professional league - announced it was ceasing operations on Monday, just five days before the Women's World Cup kicks off in Philadelphia.

The league's board of governors made the decision at a meeting in New York, which voted to close the eight-team league that started in 1999 after the enormously successful World Cup played that year.
