Tarpley voted best young athlete

SAN DIEGO -- Forward Shannon MacMillan was voted the top player U.S. women's soccer team for 2002, and Under-19 captain Lindsay Tarpley was voted young female athlete of the year.

MacMillan had a team-high 17 goals for the Americans, who defend their Women's World Cup title later this year. Tarpley scored the overtime goal that beat Canada 1-0 in the final of the first FIFA Under-19 Championship, her sixth goal of the tournament.
