Van Egmond turns down Sydney coaching role

Newcastle's Gary van Egmond has turned down an offer to fill the vacant coaching role at A-League rivals Sydney FC.

In response to speculation on Monday linking van Egmond to the Sky Blues, with an offer to begin immediately believed to be on the table, the Jets moved quickly to say he would be staying in Newcastle.

"Gary is a great coach and it is a massive compliment that Sydney FC would be chasing his services," Newcastle chief executive Robbie Middleby said in a statement.
