Gomez faces surgery

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the Bundesliga season after being injured against Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Gomez, 27, picked up the ankle injury during Bayern's penalty shoot-out defeat in the semi-final of the Liga-total! Cup and will now have an operation to remove loose fragments. He lasted just 42 minutes of the game before limping off.
