St James' Park
Tottenham, though, will feel hard done-by. Their lack of a top striker was clear and Modric was missed, but there were encouraging signs there for Villas-Boas.
FULL-TIME: Newcastle 2-1 Toottenham - Alan Pardew takes the spoils on the opening day, as goals from Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa help the Magpies to a win.
Van der Vaart crosses well and there are two players over at the back post, but Krul bravely punches clear.
Kyle Walker wins a dangerous free-kick on the right-flank. A chance to send in a cross.
Three minutes added-time...
Anita, Tiote and Jonas keeping the ball well in midfield. Tottenham need to wrestle the ball back.
Bale now strikes a long crossfield ball into the crowd on the far side.
Defoe now shoots wildly into the crowd. Doesn't look like it will be Spurs' day at this point.
Harry Kane replaces Sandro
Obertan replaces Demba Ba
Lovely cross from Demba Ba finds Cisse who chests down. Gallas clears as far as Jonas whose powerful effort is saved by Friedel.
The free-kick into the box comes to nothing as Newcastle clear well.
Simpson slides in on Lennon and concedes another free-kick. He is on a tightrope now.
Kyle Walker looks to create an immediate opportunity for Tottenham, but outruns himself, crossing into the crowd behind the goal.
GOAL Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham Ben Arfa from the spot!!! - Tucked calmly into the bottom right-hand corner.
PENALTY - Hatem Ben Arfa has Van der Vaart and Lennon beaten all ends up and squeezes between them. Definite penalty.
A break in play as Sandro receives treatment. He was caught as Tiote shot at goal.
Tiote showing a rare glimpse of his attacking talents. A lovely drag-back to fool Livermore before firing just wide.
GOAL Newcastle 1-1 Tottenham Defoe pokes home!!! A back-post cross is deflected off Santon, Krul keeps the ball out but Defoe is on hand to prod home.
Jonas once more does a fine job for his side in defence, sweeping up around the back post after a corner from the right.
Anita looks to demonstrate his passing ability with a long, raking ball for Papiss Cisse. Slightly overhit.
Anita replaces Cabaye
Fine save! Defoe is slid through by Walker and his low shot is powerfully struck, but Krul gets down well to block.
Lennon is busy, but twice he cannot find an end product. First, Simpson robs the ball off him in the corner, before the winger crosses behind for a goal-kick.
Van der Vaart immediately looks to take control and finds Assou-Ekotto beautifully. The full-back's cross cannot find its destination.
Sigurdsson off for Van der Vaart
Sandro looks to slide in Sigurdsson in the right-hand channel, Perch shepherds the ball out.
Van der Vaart being readied. Who will make way? Logic says Sigurdsson, but will Villas-Boas risk both.
Newcastle happy just to keep the ball. They have the lead and are content with that.
Tiote has been much better since half-time. He has started to make his presence felt in that midfield area.
Tottenham have done well for the last few minutes, but they need to start creating opportunities. AVB looks pensive.
Assou-Ekotto, though, can get a shot away from 35 yards. Saved comfortably by Friedel.
Instantly Spurs press forward and the ball looks to run for them on a couple of occasions, but they just cannot get shots away.
How can Spurs respond? Van der Vaart is warming up, but is he the answer?
Alan Pardew is sent from the touchline after pushing the assistant referee. He will spend the rest of the game in the stand.
Sigurdsson looks to curl a shot into the far corner. Not far wide, but he doesn't look impressed.
Cabaye is warned after another foul. Kaboul blasts the free-kick into the wall.
That was sumptuous from the Senegalese striker. He was linked away in the summer, but he has shown loyalty to Newcastle and started the season with a fine goal.
GOAL Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham Ba scores a screamer!!! That is beautiful, Walker doesn't deal well with a cross and Ba brings down the ball and bends the ball into the corner.
Newcastle playing the ball around well now. Tiote and Cabaye dropping deep.
Gareth Bale has Newcastle's defence in all sorts of danger and beats two players for fun, but can't dig out a right-footed cross in time. Goal kick.
Ben Arfa goes on a surging run and almost goes round Assou-Ekotto with ease. The full-back just about stands up to the test.
Sloppy from Bale. Sigurdsson and Lennon were waiting for a ball on the left flank, but the Welshman's scooped pass is mishit.
Almost danger at the other end though. Aaron Lennon bursts past a couple of tentative tackles and squares across goal for Defoe, but Perch just gets in to clear.
Positive start for Newcastle, getting the ball in and around the area. No real chance, but there is an urgency there.
SECOND HALF at Sports Direct Arena...
Kevin Keegan on ESPN TV suggests we may see Vurnon Anita early in the second half. They could do with an extra presence in midfield.
Andre Villas-Boas will be very content so far. Tottenham have hit the woodwork twice and they are keeping the ball well. Newcastle need to change things up.
Not the best 45 minutes we will see this season, but pleasantly enjoyable. Some interesting battles on the pitch as both teams look to open the season with a win.
HALF TIME Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
Cabaye booked for denying Bale the chance to counter
That's better. Simpson crosses from the right and Demba Ba rises, but is beaten in the air by Gallas. Corner.
Two minutes added-time in the first-half...
A lot of work to do at the break for Alan Pardew, I would venture. They need a way of integrating their strikers.
The movement of Tottenham's attacking unit, though, has been a threat. Lennon, Sigurdsson, Bale and Defoe swapping and changing.
Tottenham's high-pressure forcing Newcastle back, but neither side really could claim to be on top.
Ben Arfa does so much right, but that is really poor. A simple pass to release Jonas is played into touch.
Remember Defoe's goal against Italy? Well, he has tried it again as a Tottenham counter came to an end. This time the ball flies well over the bar.
A let-off for Newcastle as this game looks to fully kick into gear.
Off the bar! Lennon turns Santon inside out and Bale heads back across goal onto the crossbar.
Jermain Defoe runs into a blind alley down the right and James Purch comes across to rob the ball.
Tottenham look to do exactly that and they are playing the ball around at the back.
Scrappy in midfield now. Both sides need to settle back down and regain their composure.
Defoe denied by the post. Running towards goal, he squares up Steven Taylor and pulls a shot against the post.
Not coming there, though. Cheik Tiote smashes a shot from 30 yards well over the bar.
The game has slowed down a bit now, but you get the feeling that the first goal may be coming.
Sigurdsson has acres of space 30 yards out and lines up a strike, but his shot is poor. Scuffed wide of the near post.
Simpson hobbling a bit, but he will be ok. Going to be a tough game for him up against Bale.
From the resulting free-kick, Krul gets down low to save from Sigurdsson.
Simpson brings down Bale and he is a lucky man. He would have been booked there had he not already been on a card.
Ben Arfa now penalised for a pull-back on Sigurdsson. Tottenham's frustration increases.
Cabaye brings down Lennon and AVB wants a yellow card. He has a point, considering the bookings picked up by his side.
So close! Demba Ba's shot is poked in the opposite direction by Papiss Cisse and the ball creeps inches wide of the post.
Newcastle starting to get Cabaye and Ben Arfa into the game and look better for it.
Sandro for another trip on Hatem Ben-Arfa.
The ball drops for Gareth Bale on the volley 25 yards out, blocked by Steven Taylor.
Livermore for a trip on the advancing Ben Arfa
Tottenham very comfortable thus far. A very impressive start for the North Londoners.
We might be seeing Vurnon Anita, with Tiote struggling. He instructs the bench to wait though. A warrior...
Simpson booked for flattening Bale.
Assou-Ekotto is very casual in diffence. Cisse is penalised for shoving him over, but the Cameroonian needs to be more alert.
Jonas once more does a good job on Kyle Walker. The full-back looks to whip in a cross, but the Argentine is there to block and win a goal-kick.
Spurs also pressing very high, they are making it difficult for Newcastle to play out. Cisse and Ba not seeing the ball thus far.
Tottenham looking to play out of defence. Livermore dropping deep and the centre-backs splitting.
Jonas is working very hard for Newcastle already. He has the important role of harnessing Kyle Walker this afternoon.
Brilliant pass from Sandro and Sigurdsson is in, but Krul smothers well. Offside given, but he was well onside.
Cabaye swings in a free-kick from the left, headed well clear by Gallas.
Cautious start from both teams then, easing their way into the season.
Worrying moment for Newcastle. Tim Krul takes a heavy touch and is almost robbed by Jermain Defoe. That's a big escape for the Dutchman.
It was a fine tackle and clean, however, Tiote looks to have done himself some damage. He receives treatment on the sidelines.
Tiote with his first crunching tackle of the season, blocking Kyle Walker's attempted clearance.
A second corner comes in from the right but Lennon cannot control and the ball flies behind for a goal-kick.
Kyle Walker runs at Davide Santon on the right flank, but the Italian stands up well.
KICK OFF in Newcastle...
Reminder, for those of you in the United Kingdom, this game is live on ESPN TV.
Here come the teams onto the hallowed turf, led out by captains William Gallas and Jonas.
Shola Ameobi has had to pull-out during the warm-up and Sylvain Marveaux has been called onto the bench. However, they couldn't find him so Romain Amalfitano is included.
No Vertonghen for Tottenham today, he will start from the bench. Vurnon Anita should make a sub appearance for Newcastle too.
