2nd Leg: 3 - 3 (Agg)
Thanks so much for joining us folks - it's been a rollercoaster and a half! Remember you can keep the conversation going on Twitter...@marklomasESPN
That means in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and now 2012 - a first-leg defeat has led to elimination for Real Madrid. The curse continues.
Real Madrid penalties missed by Ronaldo, Kaka and Ramos. Schweinsteiger the man who converted the key spot-kick.
Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern Munich (Bayern win 3-1 on pens). So, the anticipated Barca v Real Madrid final does not come to pass - quite the opposite. It's Bayern Munich v Chelsea on May 19 as the Bundesliga side look to become the first club to win the European Cup at their home stadium in almost 50 years.
Bayern Munich going home for the Champions League final.
GOAL Schweinsteiger keeps his cool.
Now Bayern can win it. Schweinsteiger to put the Bavarians in the final...
Ramos skies it high over the crossbar. Terrible penalty.
Ramos to get Real on level terms...
Casillas saves it! Real are right back in it! Tame from Lahm.
Bayern captain Lahm steps up...
GOAL Alonso holds his nerve. 2-1
Casillas does it! He's kept Real in it. A bit timid, but Casillas does well to get down.
Kroos for Bayern, to put them three up...
Saved by Neuer - Unbelievable! Almost identical to the save from Ronaldo. Down to the lef.
Kaka now for Real Madrid...
GOAL Gomez. Picks his spot. Excellent. 2-0 Bayern.
Gomes steps up...
He's missed! Neuer saves it. Strong right hand.
Up for Real is Ronaldo, missed in the '08 final...
Bayern to take the first spot-kick. Alaba to take...
Bayern players huddled up, some final words of inspiration from Schweinsteiger it appears.
Jose Mourinho tasted penalty shootout defeat in a Champions League semi-final back in 2007, when Liverpool beat Chelsea to go through to the final.
Wow, so it's time to see who can hold their nerve. My gut instinct says Bayern Munich - but I'm always ready to be proved wrong...
The 120 minutes are up, it's time for a shootout.
Into the last minute then, we're heading for penalties. Boateng sitting down suffering with cramp.
Massive respect for all the players, keeping up such intensity.
@EddySoboll on Twitter: For Real Madrid this is the 3rd big game in a week. Talk about being fit...
But Higuain had strayed offside in the build up. Real were streaming forward too.
Ronaldo has the ball in the net after an excellent run from Marcelo, which started in his own penalty box.
The referee certainly not fooled. Must say it was excellent play from Kaka to create the chance.
Clear dive and Granero deservedly booked!
Kaka finds Granero who takes the ball away from Neuer and goes down...
Schweinsteiger delivers a pinpoint cross-field ball but looks in some discomfort immediately. He's put in a very good shift. As have all of these players!
Bayern now with a first attack of note in the second half of extra-time but it breaks down around the Real penalty area.
Kaka again in a good position but once more, the final ball just can't be executed. He was looking to nip it in to the middle after controlling well on the chest, but his pass didn't get past the first man.
Jose Mourinho speaks to his players before extra-time begins.
Granero on for Ozil.
Real bossing things at present and Ronaldo is on his backside as Kaka's cross comes in. No contact though, he just fell.
Granero now being readied for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo limping a little now, three massive games in the space of a week perhaps starting to take their toll.
Ronaldo has a sliced shot that goes well wide after a neat short free-kick from Alonso.
Marcelo brought down by Robben.
Kaka advances in to a good position but can't release the ball.
The noise levels being lifted significantly by the Real fans.
Higuain's fresh legs could threaten what must be a tiring Bayern defence.
Second of half of extra-time commences...
Jose must be reading this!
Higuain on for Benzema.
A quick turnaround and we're ready to roll again.
HT ET: Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern. Real certainly looking a little sharper in extra-time, big blows for Gustavo and Badstuber who are out of the final if Bayern get there. Penalties beckon - Jose Mourinho must be thinking about bringing Higuain on for that winner.
Half-time in extra-time...
It was a really rash challenge on Benzema. The referee initially played the advantage with Real given a chance to pur forward, but Ronaldo couldn't quite control it to break on the halfway line.
Badstuber. Another player out of the final.
Khedira's turn to head clear.
Kroos delivers and Ramos knocks it out again, under pressure from Gomez.
Arbeloa loses the ball in a risky area and Lahm crosses. Ramos heads it out. Bayern corner.
Khedira searches for Ronaldo but his lfoted pass os over-hit. Real definitely looking more interested now though.
Gustavo will be out of the final if they get there after fouling Pepe.
Muller crosses from the right and Casillas, Ramos and Pepe all look a little confused as it soars in between all of them, nearly an epic mix-up but crisis averted!
Kroos swicthes it wide to Muller, and once more Bayern's patient build up is not popular with the Real Madrid fans.
Ronaldo, definitely more involved in the game after a pretty quiet second half, crosses towards Benzema. However, Neuer claims.
Ronaldo looked to have a chance to shoot with his left but he just didn't quite seem to fancy swinging a boot at it.
Ronaldo nips the ball off Lahm and he plays it to Kaka, who can't quite move it on to Marcelo.
First chance for Muller to cross, but his touch is heavy and it's just crept out for a goal-kick.
Robben on the left now and Muller on the right.
Alonso delivers the free-kick but Neuer is up to collect with relative ease.
Muller on for Ribery.
Ribery shoulder barges Ronaldo down, after the Portuguese leapt onto a long ball forward from compatriot Pepe.
Schweinsteiger and Robben combine for Bayern as they look to find their feet in extra-time.
Real have turned it up a notch at the start of extra-time, playing at a much better tempo than they finished the 90.
Ronaldo fouled but advantage played and Kaka does superbly to keep the ball as a crowd of Bayern players close in.
An early corner for Real comes to nothing, Ronaldo tried a speculative overhead effort but didn't quite connect properly.
We're off for extra-time...
I don't fancy Chelsea against either to be honest!
@GNicholson25 on Twitter: as a chelsea fan right now who would i rather play at the allianz right now bayern or madrid?
Still no changes from Bayern, theyve got Muller to come on of course, maybe Olic could be the man to grab a goal.
FT: Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern Munich. It's a war of attrition, Bayern looking the most likely to make the breakthrough, Gomez missing a great chance in the second half. It's still so tough to call. Let's hope it gets a little more open and less nervy in extra-time.
There's the final whistle, we're heading to extra-time!
Excellent defending from Marcelo and he's released Ronaldo - he dribbles it on and cuts inside. But his shot does not worry Neuer.
Last minute of stoppage time now, and it's looking more likely that Bayern will score than Real.
Could have been four on three for Bayern but Robben forced wide.
@SealTeemSix on Twitter: I'm obviously biased (as a Bayern fan) but the closer this gets to penalties, the more confident i'll get. Except for Robben!
Robben booked for dissnet after not being given a free-kick.
Alonso whips it in but Alaba heads it clear. Poor ball in really.
Ozil wins a free-kick on the right wing and Real pack the box. Alonso and Ozil lining it up to deliver.
Pepe and Ribery come together and Pepe is holding himself and rolling around. A nice little triple somersault with tuck. Ten out of ten.
Arbeloa with a really poor cross and Bayern can break wuth him out of position.
Khedira irate at the ref not awarding him a throw-in. But moments later Real have a free-kick.
Poor from Gomez, a real chance about ten yards out and he just took too much time.
He hasn't hit it first time, he's taken an unnecessary touch from Robben's cross and Ramos got a crucial block in.
The ball comes to Gomez, who is free in the box...
So extra-time is looming large and remember, a Bayern goal now would basically be game over for Real Madrid as they would need to score twice.
Angel di Maria and David Alaba battle for the ball.
Stats: Only two Champions League semi-finals have ever gone to extra-time, both involving Liverpool and Chelsea.
Delightful from Kaka to make some space in midfield but as he looked for the through ball to Ronaldo he was closed down by a herd of red shirts.
Mistakes slipping into both sides' games at the moment.
Penetrating run from Ozil but as the ball switches left, Lahm collects and allows Bayern to attack again.
Real Madrid break with Kaka but Badstuber holds his nerve in a one-on-one situation.
It's all Bayern here, Lahm and Robben combine on the right.
Stats: This is the 14th fixure between Bayern and Real Madrid, which means it is the most frequent fixture in the history of the competition.
Ozil swings it in but Ronaldo's flick-on glances away for a throw-in.
Benzema gets ahead of Badstuber and to the byline on the right, but Boateng is across and diverts it out for a corner. Vital defending.
Superb challenge from Ramos to prevent Robben's through ball making it to Gomez.
I'm really struggling to call which way this one will go.
Ribery sprints down the left and I must say that Bayern have looked the more dangerous side in the past 20 minutes. Some really tidy football from the Germans.
Kaka on for Di Maria.
A few people asking about which players will miss the final if carded. Alaba is already out for Bayern - and those in danger of joining him are:
Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber Luiz Gustavo, Toni Kroos, and Thomas Muller. For Real Madrid, it's Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso, Fabio Coentrao and Gonzalo Higuain.
Kaka warming up for Real Madrid and he's about to come one.
Ribery on the edge of the Real box and he finds Kroos who switches to Robben. The Dutchman flashes the ball across but no-one can meet it.
Over the crossbar. Disappointing.
Ronaldo lines it up...
Shouldn't have even been a free-kick looking back, it was a great tackle on Ozil!
Another Real Madrid free-kick, Gustavo fouls and manages to avoid a booking again - much to the annoyance of the Bernabeu faithful.
Ronaldo does well to keep it in play on the left wing and accelerates forward, he sets the ball back to Benzema, who knocks an ambitious side foot volley over the bar from 20 yards out.
Straight down Neuer's throat again.
Ronaldo free-kick now, 25 yards out on the left...
Headed clear powerfully by Gomez.
Real corner now, Badstuber knocked it out.
Robben in space on the right after getting a lucky deflection - he's one-on-one with Pepe, but a slightly heavy touch allows Casillas out to take the ball off his feet.
But his flick is just too delicate and the ball goes wide.
Kroos delivers an inswinger from the left and Gimez rises to meet it...
Arbeloa again pulled up for fouling Ribery, the Real right-back needs to be careful.
I wonder how long Real will wait before bringing on a sub - Kaka or Higuain must be looking tempting.
And of course as I mention them retaining the ball, they immediately give it awau. Commentator's curse.
The Bernabeu boos ring around as Bayern play keep-ball again.
Kroos tries an ambitious attempt from around 25 yards out but his effort is blocked.
@AlexFricke on Twitter: Bayern could use a bit of luck with another yellow on Pepe, giving them the man advantage like 2 years ago at ManU
Great running from Schweinsteiger but as he looks to exchange passes with Alaba and Gustavo he strays offside.
Ribery again draws the foul, as Alonso and Ramos sandwich him.
Ribery won the initial header from the corner and then looked to sprint away. He would have been through into the Real half had Arbeloa not acted.
Arbeloa booked for cynically taking down Ribery.
Ronaldo runs at Lahm and wins a corner for Real Madrid, incisive play from the Portuguese.
Here we go, it's opening up again now. Gomez finds himself in a bit of space but he's just a bit slow to set up for a shot on the 18-yard line and his effort eventually takes a deflection harmlessly towards Casillas.
Decent effort from Benzema from a tight angle. He thumped the ball from the right of the area towards the left corner and Neuer got a good hand to it.
And seconds later, Ribery gives away a foul for bundling over Di Maria.
Gustavo penalised for a tug on Ozil, cheap free-kick to concede.
Now Real Madrid's turn but Marcelo gives it away cheaply. If I was Jupp Heynckes I'd be telling my players to get the ball to Robben so he can take on the Brazilian left-back at every opportunity.
Bayern holding on to the ball well at present, Schweinsteiger again at the centre of things. Robben tries to pick out Gomez, but his pass is intercepted.
Not quite as free-flowing as we'd hoped so far in the second half, it's been a little bitty.
If only they had Der Bomber on the field tonight!
@marzbar4life on Twitter: @bmunich need a Gerd Muller like performance in this second half to advance to the final!
I have forgotten to even mention yet that the final is of course at the Allianz Arena - what an incentive that is for Bayern Munich, a home Champions League final would be an absolute dream.
Lovely bit of footwork from Ribery to create some space on the left, but Arbeloa gets across and draws a foul.
Stats: Bayern have won their last three UCL games against Spanish clubs, but have never managed to previously win four in a row.
But the header is just wide of the left post. Good ball, good climb, but no goal.
Lahm crosses towards Gomez, great delivery...
Bayern's turn to press now, with Schweinsteiger trying to dictate proceedings in midfield.
No men in white to turn it in on this occasion though.
Di Maria collects the ball on the right wing and an itnerchange with Arbeloa and Benzema sees the Frenchman get to the byline and fizz a cross right acroos the six-yard box...
And we're off for the second 45...
The players are back out on the pitch now and we're almost ready for what should be a thrilling 45 minutes of football.
Definitely agree with both of those last comments!
@techfreak_KP on Twitter: I have a feeling the second half will show us more cards and this match is surely going to the wire!!!
@EvanMFox on Twitter: with half of the Chelsea first team to be benched during the final - tonight's victory is extremely valuable!
Marcelo joins Cristiano Ronaldo to celebrate Real Madrid's second against Bayern.
That's a confident prediction, I certainly can't be as sure. It's still in Real's hands really, but Gomez has indeed looked dangerous in the first half without scoring.
@NeilStambaugh on Twitter: Bayern will come through with goals from Gomez and a second from Robben to take the 2nd leg and advance
@ACM1986 on Twitter: this game is looking eerily similar to yesterday's #barca #chelsea contest given the situations from each team's first match.
Not sure if that was a direct jibe at Barca, who often use the 'DNA' term when talking about themselves.
The winner of this game of course takes on Chelsea in the final after their heroics against Barcelona last night. Roberto Di Matteo has said today that superhuman performances are in the Blues' DNA.
If Bayern score again, Real will need two more to go through. The Bavarians have progressed on away goals four times before, more than any other club in Champions League history.
Remember to keep your comments coming in on Twitter - seems to be mainly Real Madrid fans tweeting me at the moment! - @marklomasESPN
Arjen Robben celebrates after scoring a vital penalty for Bayern at the Bernabeu, making it 3-3 on aggregate.
HT: Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich. After a scintillating start it looked as though Real were crusing into the final but Robben's penalty has put the cat among the pigeons. It's 3-3 on aggregate with all to play for in the second half.
There goes the half-time whistle...
Brilliant save from Casillas, low down to his right - and it took a deflection!
It's pretty much dead centre. Looks like Robben to take it...
Free-kick for Bayern now, right on the very edge of the box, Robben forced over by Pepe.
Floated over but it's all the way through and out for a goal-kick.
Di Maria suggesting he should be booked but the ref not interested. Alonso to take the free-kick.
Ozil looks outraged as Gustavo brings him down on the left edge of the penalty area.
And the Portuguese puts in a solid challenge on Gomez, who was waiting to convert a cross had he not intercepted.
Pepe gets a good defensive header in with the ball bouncing awkwardly - Ribery and Gomez were both closing in on him if he got it wrong.
So things have calmed down a little since that crazy opening 25 minutes. Not quite the same pace of game at the moment.
Di Maria crosses, and Alaba with a diving header clear.
Badstuber eases Ozil off the ball, but it's unfairly according to the ref.
The Bernabeu is still very noisy, though it's loud whistles at the moment as Bayern keep possession.
Looking back at that Gomez effort, too, he really should have done better.
The Ribery penalty appeal was not a penalty - good call from the ref. Alonso got an incredible toe to the ball just as the Frenchman was going to pull the trigger.
Ronaldo hits a dipping effort but it's comfortable for Neuer.
Bayern get it clear initially but Real have a free-kick now. Left of centre, about 25 yards out. I'll give you one guess as to who will take it...
Down the other end straight away and Real have a corner after Boateng crunches through Ronaldo, getting man and ball.
Cross comes in towards Gomez but Casillas gets in ahead to punch it away, then Ribery goes down under the challenge of Alonso. The referee's not giving another penalty just yet though.
Gomez seemed to think he was offside, but he wasn't.
But he's hit it straight at Casillas - who didn't know that much about it.
What a chance for Gomez...
Ronaldo looking dangerous every time he gets the ball. He searches for Benzema in the middle on this occasion, but the ball is cut out.
@EddySoboll on Twitter: No more nails to bite... Another day in Paradise!!! How not to love football?
Play stops as Di Maria is down inder the challenge of Alaba. Typical Di Maria that, get up!
Robben off down the left - barely any time to rest here.
Cracking effort from Benzema, he cut in from the left and tried to drive it into the top right corner. It had a bit of bend on it but couldn't straighten up and went wide.
Ronaldo takes a free-kick and nearly catches Neuer off guard from all of 30 yards - but it bounces just wide.
I'm pretty confident it won't stay the same.
So the tie is perfectly poised now, extra-time and penalties if it stays the same.
It looked a bit of a soft penallty on first look - Pepe puts an arm on Gomez's back as he tries to attack Kroos' right-wing cross and the big striker goes down very easily.
Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern. I really mean squeezed it in. Casillas got his gloves to it but couldn't push it away and it crept in off the left-hand post. Game one.
GOAL Robben squeezes it home.
Penalty to Bayern Munich as Pepe pushes Gomez in the area!
Nearly a shocking miscommunication - Ronaldo's cross palmed away by Neuer but Badstuber waited for his keeper to collect it back up and Benzema was lurking.
Gustavo has looked pretty lively for Bayern in midfield so far, linking up the play well.
Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his first goal from the penalty spot.
Still a very open game, Bayern look more than capable of scoring as Gustavo takes a swipe at goal from 25 yards away this time. His left-foot effort goes just wide of the right post.
Gomez allowed to run straight through from midfield and he strikes one from about 20 yards. Dragged wide on this occasion but Casillas looks unhappy that he was allowed to shoot so easily.
Stats: Cristiano Ronaldo now has 56 goals in 51 games this season.
The ball allowed to bounce on the six-yard line, but no Bayern player can get a decisive touch.
Ribery this time with the positive running down the left and he's won Bayern a corner.
Not really been any joy for Robben yet - Bayern need to get the ball to him where possible though as he will always be the chief threat.
Bayern with some patient passing across midfield but Marcelo puts in a well-timed tackle on Robben.
It certainly seems like that record will continue!
@leontymccarthy on Twitter: R.M have a 100% home record in C.League this term and have won 10 of last 11 European games at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Robben tries to curl one from the edge of the area but it's deflected kindly into Casillas' hands.
Nothing's really changed for Bayern - they still have to score a goal. A strike for the Bavarians would take it into extra-time, though I feel there's more than one goal left in this game.
Real Madrid 2-0 Bayern. Ronaldo given SO much space as Ozil picked him out and just inside the box he calmly slid the ball past Neuer.
GOAL Ronaldo given acres.
Looking at that interception from Khedira again, Ribery was primed to slot in the rebound off Casillas. Excellent defending.
Great tempo to the game so far and Bayern understandably piling on some pressure.
Gomez's strike is spilt by Casillas but Khedira stops Ribery getting a decent connection on the follow-up and it's a Bayern corner.
Robben sprints down the Bayern right and is brought down by Marcelo - but the referee shakes his head.
Khedira and Di Maria combine again down the right but Bayern clear their lines.
Stats: Only one of Bayern's last 30 games in the UCL has been a draw. They've won 20 and lost nine.
That was such a good chance, Robben has bottled it badly.
But he's sent it high over the bar! What an incredible miss from the former Real Madrid man.
Alaba crosses to an unmarked Robben...
What a disastrous start from Bayern, the penalty may have been slightly harsh and Alaba misses the final now if Bayern can get through.
Real Madrid 1-0 Bayern. Nine goals in ten matches for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League this season and he sent Neuer the wrong way - placing it perfectly into the bottom right corner.
GOAL Ronaldo slots it home.
Long pass found Di Maria and his shot was met by the hand of Alaba while he was sliding to make the challenge.
Penalty to Real Madrid!
Late challenge from Arbeloa - he's not one of the players on a yellow card but he's escaped this time anyway.
Alonso with a great pass to Di Maria, who skipped into space inside the right of the penalty box and teed up his German team-mate. But Khedira hit it straight at neuer from about ten yards out.
Khedira with a chance, but he's hit it straight at Neuer.
A couple of tasty little touches from Ozil to open up some space but he's crowded out on the edge of the box.
Eight players starting the game within a yellow from missing the final as Ronaldo goes down.
So here we go, Bayern get us under way and there's an early touch for Neuer, who was on the losing side in the semis last year, when Schalke lost to Man Utd.
And we're off...
Ready for kick off now. Everyone ready?
Real of course in confident mood having beaten Barca at the weekend to basically tie up LA Liga. The Bernabeu is buzzing and I reckon the away goal will be enough to see them through.
Five of the times they've been knocked out have come in the past six years too - 2006 (Arsenal), 2008 (Roma), 2009 (Liverpool), 2010 (Lyon) & 2011 (Barca)
Real Madrid have goat an okay previous record of overturning first leg deficits in Europe - of the 40 times they have been behind going into the second leg, Los Blancos have progressed 23 times and been knocked out 17 times.
Very much looking forward to this one tonight and as always, I'd like to hear your views on the game so contact me on Twitter - @marklomasESPN
Stats: Only four clubs have ever overturned a first-leg deficit in a Champions League semi-final to progress - AC Milan, Liverpool (both 2007), Juve (2003) and Ajax (1996).
Just the one change for Real Madrid as the always loveable Marcelo comes in for Fabio Coentrao: Casillas - Arbeloa, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo - Khedira, Xabi Alonso - di Maria, Özil, Ronaldo - Benzema
Team news is in - Bayern Munich unchanged: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Badstuber, Alaba, Gustavo, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Kroos, Ribery, Gomez
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he is "expecting hell" at the Bernabeu tonight.
Despite losing the first leg, Mesut Ozil's away goal means that Real Madrid are favoutires to progress.
Join Mark Lomas from 1945 BST for the Champions League semi-final second leg between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Bayern lead 2-1 from the first leg and a draw will be enough to take them through to the final.
