1 - 1

Arsenal

Group F

18:45 +00:00, September 13, 2011

Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany

Referee: Gianluca Rocchi

  • 90'

A great piece of entertainment, that. Dortmund indeed deserved at least a point but Arsenal will rue not holding on for the final minutes. It was a stunning leveller, mind. Positives for Arsenal: the fighting spirit shown, Arteta shining and Van Persie scoring once more. Dortmund are definitely ones to watch this Champions League season. Oh, and Goetze, he lived up to his billing.

  • 90'

    FULL-TIME: Dortmund 1-1 Arsenal.

  • 90'

We're into the final minute as Arteta wins a free-kick to regain possession for Arsenal.

  • 90'

Dortmund laying on the pressure. Big two minutes for the Gunenrs. Just seen two shouts for a penalty turned down, ref having none of it, despite handball claims.

  • 90'

    Arsenal on the ropes.

  • 90'

Massive save. Massive. Szczesny dives at the feet of Lewandowski who was set to score from inside the box.

  • 90'

Four minutes of added time to be played.

  • 90'

The crowd are now rocking. Can Arsenal ride out the storm?

  • 88'

What. A. Goal. A free-kick is cleared but Perisic hits the dropping ball first time. It is a brilliant volley, dropping into the top corner with the keeper rooted. Stunning.

  • 88'

    GOAL!!! Dortmund have levelled!

  • 87'

Vital bit of reading of the game from Koscielny, who has improved after a shaky beginning.

  • 86'

Andre Santos makes his debut, on for Gervinho.

  • 86'

Song inherits the captain's armband off Van Persie.

  • 85'

Chamakh is on for Arsenal, replacing Van Persie, while Kagawa is taken off for Zidan.

  • 83'

Goetze slices one wide. Dortmund's build-up play has been spot-on, but their finishing woeful.

  • 82'

Dortmund have had 18 shots to Arsenal's eight.

  • 81'

How have Dortmund not scored?! A corner finds its way to the feet of Subotic, who toes from just a few yards out. He strikes straight at the keeper. What a let-off.

  • 80'

Sagna booked for time-wasting. A little harsh.

  • 80'

Oh dear. The free-kick is cleared and Blaszczykowski tries his luck with an ambitious volley. Needless to say it drifts wide harmlessly.

  • 79'

Free-kick in an interesting area for Dortmund after Arteta caught Goetze.

  • 78'

Koscielny just dinked a lovely-looking ball in for Van Persie, who was flagged marginally offside. Was clean through otherwise.

  • 77'

    Frimpong is on for Walcott.

  • 76'

Schmelzer, goes into the book after catching Gervinho from behind.

  • 75'

Kagawa just had a dipping volley effort from range. Whistled over after sitting nicely for him.

  • 74'

Fabulous break from Dortmund but a whipped ball in from the right finds no-one.

  •

Arsene Wenger gesticulates from the stands - not directing proceedings of course.

  • 73'

Arteta is having a very solid game for Arsenal. Battled well.

  • 72'

Groans from the home fans as Subotic passes out of play. Dortmund deserve a goal, but Arsenal holding firm.

  • 71'

Walcott fails to control a simple pass and the pressure continues in Dortmund's favour.

  • 70'

Ivan Perisic also enters the fray for Grosskreutz.

  • 69'

First chance of the game: Kehl off for for Blaszczykowski.

  • 68'

Huge tackle from Song to deny Goetze in the box. Vital.

  • 67'

Arsenal definitely looking to play on the counter. They cannot hold onto the ball while their clearances are coming straight back at them.

  • 65'

Benayoun gives the ball away in a dangerous area. Looking leggy is the midfielder.

  • 64'

Free-kick to Arsenal from 30 yards out. Theo Walcott takes it. WHY?! And he boshes it into the wall. Poor.

  • 63'

Dortmund are well in charge of the possession. Arsenal soaking it up.

  • 62'

Oh! Gervinho turns on the pace and is through on goal. A defender appears to clip him but he carries on before shooting straight at the goalkeeper, who had closed the angle. Arteta now back on.

  • 61'

Great challenge by Song as he nips in as Arsenal are down to 10 with Arteta off the field.

  • 59'

Arteta's bleeding after a clash of heads. He is on his feet, might need stitches though.

  • 58'

Walcott is then found by Van Persie, but the former skies a curled shot.

  • 57'

Arteta has a chance to test the keeper with a free-kick but toes his effort into the wall. Credit to the Spaniard though as he then makes two key tackles to win back the ball.

  • 55'

Dreadful tracking back from Walcott allows Goetze to slide in a team-mate down the left, but the delivery from the left is sloppy at best.

  • 54'

Walcott's scuffed shot catches a deflection and flicks over the bar. Could have gone anywhere.

  • 53'

Piszczek lashes one over after Goetze's cheeky defence-splitting pass is cut out then falls loose.

  • 51'

Arsenal can't keep the ball. Dortmund's pressing has been superb.

  • 50'

Wayward clearance from Mertesacker as he thumps the ball into the sky. Koscielny makes a key block.

  • 49'

Benayoun looking a little like a headless chicken in this half already.

  • 48'

Excellent tracking back from Arteta eases the pressure on his defence as he mops up.

  • 47'

Dortmund already on the attack but the cross from the right is too lengthy.

  • 46'

    No changes for either side.

  • 46'

Kick-off: Dortmund get the second half started.

  •

Van Persie celebrates after putting the Gunners 1-0 up at the Westfalenstadion.

  •

Brandon predicts via Twitter: "Arsenal 2. Borussia Dortmund 1. Van Persie brace."

  •

Robin van Persie got the better of Dortmund's defence to give Arsenal a half-time lead.

  •

Just seeing a montage of all the Dortmund chances. How they haven't scored is beyond me.

  •

Elsewhere in Group F, it is goalless between Olympiakos and Marseille.

  •

You can have your say on the match thus far via Twitter @JamesDallESPN

  •

What a thoroughly enjoyable half of football. Arsenal lead thanks to Van Persie's fine finish but that tells little of the story as Dortmund were hugely impressive, attacking at will. There are surely more goals in this game.

  • 45'

    Half-time: Dortmund 0-1 Arsenal.

  • 45'

Only one added minute will be played, despite Koscielny treatment.

  • 44'

Arsenal defend it well. To go in at half-time in front would be huge for the Gunners.

  • 43'

    Corner to Dortmund.

  • 42'

Walcott threads in Van Persie with a smart pass and the Dutchman makes no mistake as he slots in with his right foot. What a big goal for Arsenal.

  • 42'

GOAL!!! Robin Van Persie scores for Arsenal!!!

  • 41'

Dortmund have been bright but their widemen poor. In the centre of defence there appears to be potential for issues though, yet Arsenal have not exploited that.

  • 40'

Gervinho bursts forward but runs into a group of bodies. Move breaks down.

  • 39'

Lewandowski just had a free header in the box. Mertesacker lost his man.

  • 38'

Dortmund have had five shots to Arsenal's two, the latter boasting more possession though.

  • 37'

Szczesny plucks a cross from the right out of the air. Dortmund had again sprung clear.

  • 36'

Dortmund waste a decent position on the left flank via an overhit cross. Sloppy, really. Arsenal have lacked Dortmund's spark, but it remains goalless, so Arsene will be pleased thus far.

  • 34'

Dortmund attack with such pace. Really enjoyable team to watch.

  • 33'

Ah! Benayoun pings a quite stunning through ball to Van Persie, who controls then lashes into the side-netting. A decent opportunity.

  • 32'

Gervinho embarks on a mazy run and does well until he takes on one too many opponents.

  • 30'

Koscielny clears with a diving header. Looks a matter of time before Dortmund score, in truth.

  • 29'

Van Persie controls a searching ball but is eased out of matters as a goal kick is awarded.

  • 28'

Benayoun, of all people, is forced to squeeze out an attack on the right. Goetze looks brilliant, by the way.

  •

Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski and Arsenal's Per Mertesacker vie for the ball

  • 26'

Mertesacker loses a header, somehow, but then redeems himself with a key interception.

  • 25'

Koscielny seems ok, about to be waved back on.

  • 24'

Wenger looks pensive in the stands. Stroking his chin.

  • 23'

Koscielny is down injured after a clash of heads. Treatment being received now.

  • 22'

Oooo. Arsenal pounce forward thanks to fine play from Song. Gervinho threads in Walcott, who can't quite get the ball under control as Dortmund shut the door.

  • 20'

It's easily cleared. Decent delivery from RVP though. Atmosphere still electric. The field of yellow is glorious.

  • 19'

    Another corner to Arsenal...

  • 18'

Weidenfeller punches the corner clear and Goetze picks up the ball on the edge before dropping a shoulder and sparking a counter, which results in a shot blasted over.

  • 17'

This is more comfortable for Arsenal now as they enjoy the ball up near Dortmund's goal. Corner now, actually.

  • 16'

Arsenal scamper forward and ease the pressure. Wise move.

  • 15'

Super feet from Van Persie draws a foul from Goetze.

  • 14'

Arsenal try and take the sting out of the game with a few passes.

  • 13'

Arsenal are being very wasteful in possession. Very.

  • 12'

Off the line! Goezte skips on and lifts a classy pass into Lewandowski, who rounds the keeper. He strikes, but Sagna is there to hook off the line.

  • 11'

Dortmund have the momentum now as they push on. Arsenal have made some sloppy errors and must iron those out if they were to avoid a first-half setback.

  • 10'

Kagawa spins away and loses his man as Arsenal play a high line. It's a good chance but the first touch is poor and the effort is off target.

  • 9'

Good confident claim from Szczesny as a ball loops high.

  • 8'

Van Persie just rolled a wicked through ball into Gervinho's path, but it was only a little heavy. Real chance to attack.

  • 6'

Then Dortmund attack and Grosskreutz is free on the left to shoot, but he skies his effort when he should certainly hit the target. My, what a few minutes.

  • 5'

...Gervinho is somehow clean through after shambolic defending. He should score, but manages to find the hand of the keeper, think it was a fine piece of defending actually.

  • 5'

Nice surge forward from Arsenal but Gibbs' cross is cut out. Wait...

  • 4'

Mertesacker goes in nicely to disposes. He slid in, which is rare for the German.

  • 3'

Arsenal continue to enjoy the most of the ball.

  • 3'

Dortmund lift a ball over the top but the flag is up for offside.

  • 2'

Dortmund play a goal kick short. Worth keeping an eye on that policy. Arsenal enjoying much of the possession so far.

  • 1'

Arsenal spring a ball forward but Walcott cannot quite reach it.

  • 1'

Kick-off: Arsenal get the match started.

  •

The teams are out, shaking hands and the like. This has much promise this match. Let's hope it delivers.

  •

Wow. Incredible atmosphere at the stadium.

  •

The Westfalenstadion is a terrific venue, isn't it? Bound to be a brilliant atmosphere. Bring it on.

  •

Benayoun has scored six goals in 23 Champions League appearances. Not a bad record, Yossi.

  •

Arsene Wenger will of course watch on from the stands after he was slapped with a further two-match ban from UEFA for seemingly breaching the terms of his previous ban. That means Pat Rice in charge. Good old Pat.

  •

Goetze's the real deal, by all accounts. The Germany international was linked with the Gunners during the summer and will undoubtedly been keep to strut his stuff. He looks an exciting prospect, and, personally, I can't wait to see him in action versus Arsenal.

  •

So, what about that Mario Goetze, eh?

  •

As you will have noticed, Yossi Benayoun makes his first start for Arsenal, replacing the injured Aaron Ramsey. Frimpong, surprisingly, misses out. The Gunners' midfield looks a little lightweight.

  •

And the referee for tonight's game is Italian official Gianluca Rocchi.

  •

Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Song, Arteta, Walcott, Benayoun, Gervinho, van Persie. Subs: Fabianski, Park, Andre Santos, Djourou, Arshavin, Frimpong, Chamakh.
