A controversial match comes to an end and Manchester United come away with a crucial win. But the main talking point was Lille's contemplation of leaving the field after the decision to let Giggs' free-kick stand.
FULL-TIME: LILLE 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED
The final few minutes wind down with little action or invention. Scholes makes way for John O'Shea but he's not likely to get a touch with time almost up.
Substitute Bastos has a crack from distance but it ends up in row z. A desperate attempt from a now desperate side. Surely their last chance to steal an equaliser.
After squabbling and talks with officials, the players return to the middle and the game continues. The crowd are still fuming and vent their anger by throwing bottles and other missiles on to the pitch. Ugly scenes but United have a vital away goal and there's only a few minutes left for Lille to rescue this tie.
Amazing scenes in France. Lille players are considering coming off the field. Someone from the Lille bench has gestured at his players to leave the field after the decision went against them. A melee ensues and arguments break out with both sets of players. Incredible turn of events.
A cheekily taken free-kick from Ryan Giggs catches out the Lille wall and Sylva in the goal. Lille players are furious and surround the referee. The goal will stand.
GOAL: LILLE 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED - Giggs
Giggs at the other end somewhat wastes a chance from a long way out. He was caught between passign to Rooney and lobbing the keeper. In the end he did neither and Chalme can bring the ball away.
Dangerous cross from Debuchy and a desperate lunge from Audel almost catches out van der sar at his near post. Fergie is not best pleased as his defence was once more carved open.
Cabaye has made a big difference in midfield. His enthusiasm has allowed Bodmer to come into the game more and United are being pushed further back.
A change for Lille and Odemwingie makes way for Johan Audel. They're ambitious still and looking the more likely to score at the moment.
Larsson almost drops in a wonderful chip with his left foot. He had to improvise after Sylva had spilled his first effort and the Swede's effort floated just inches over the bar.
Lu Puen on the other hand is urging his side forward and is sensing an unlikely goal.
Weak shouts for a penalty from the United players Saha went up for a header and Plestan's hand did look suspiciously close to the ball. But the referee is having none of it.
Fergie is out on the sideline and doesn't look too pleased with what's unfolding infront of him.
It's end to end now and Obemwingie tries a curling effort with his left foot from the right-hand edge of the box. He beat Vidic easily enough, but his shot hops a foot wide.
And Saha immediately has a chance to find the net. A wonderful dummy from Giggs inside the box allows Saha a free strike on goal, but the Frenchman slips and his shot ends up safely in the arms of Sylva.
United look to change things and Ronaldo comes off for Louis Saha. He doesn't look best pleased at all and mutters a few words to himself as he sulks off to the bench.
Lille are breaking up play to good effect now and United aren't seeing too much of the ball. With the crowd alive once more, Lille have the momentum.
What a call from the dutch referee. Odemwingie thought he'd put Lille ahead after powering home a header from close range, but the ref spotted a push from the striker on Vidic and he's chalked it off. Hard luck on Lille.
DISALLOWED GOAL: LILLE
Lille are buzzing again the red shirts are pouring forward. Makoun has a go from distance but his low drive deflects off Ferdinand. United have taken a few hits in the last five minutes.
Best chance of the match and it's fallen to Lille's Bodmer. He should have scored and it was a real let-off for the visitors. He escaped the clutches of Vidic but could only poke his effort in the path of van der sar's foot and United escape.
Lille look to freshen things up and Cabaye comes on for Fauvergue. Cabaye will slot into an attacking midfield role to supoort Obemwingie.
Great chance for Ronaldo and a fantastic save by Sylva. The winger charged down on the Frenchman's goal but could not find a way as the keeper standsd tall and palms Ronaldo's shot to safety.
Latest update on the crowd trouble is that the panic has ceased and all is calm once more. The word from United camp is that there were too many supoprters crammed into that section of the stadium. They'll want an explanation after the game and rightly so.
Rooney comes alive and terrorises the Lille defence. He rounds two helpless defenders and lifts a tempting chip to the back post where Ryan Giggs slides in. He arrives a little too late and can't wrap his boot around it to divert it home. Best moment of the match.
The crowd loved that, Ronaldo (still being booed) does a few pointless lollipops and runs straight into Makoun. Comedy moment that hands Lille possession.
The pitch really is awful tonight. It looks like a farmer has come through with his plough and decimated the top surface. Throw in a cold snap and attempts to flatten it and you've got a nightmare of a pitch and it's making for a very scrappy game.
A draw wouldn't be disastrous for Manchester United but they have certainly got the toold to put this Lille side to the sword in this first leg.
Lille get the game back underway.
The only goals of the night so far have come in Real Madrid's tie against Bayern Munich. It's 3-1 to the home side there and we're hoping for some goals for this match in France.
It's been a scrappy first-half performance from both sides although United have dominated possession without ever really threatening the Lille goal. Needs to improve after the break.
HALF-TIME: LILLE 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
Another neat interchange between Larsson and Rooney but again no end product. The crowd have become subdued and it's a tepid end to the half.
Bodmer has a strike from long range and it wasn't too far away. It caugfht a bobble along the way and made Van der Sar scramble across to his left to make sure. Lille's best chance.
Lille look to have run out of ideas and it's all United as the half comes to a close. They just lack that cutting edge and it's made for a scrappy and tetchy game so far.
Double chance for United and two great chances to score. Their patience almost paid off as Giggs feeds in Rooney and from a tight angle he fires at Sylva, it rebounds out to Larsson who can't get a clean contact and Lille can clear.
Scholes is trying to add some calm and patience into the United attack and it's having an effect. Ronaldo and Giggs need to support him though and give him the drive that could get United moving.
Obraniak again fires in a fierce left-footer and again it causes panic in the United ranks. The danger is cleared by Scholes but United are being denied the chance to play their free-flowing football.
Obranik sends in a teasing left-foot cross from deep and Fauvergue was lurking with intent once more. They are certainly looking to get those crosses in early and test Ferdinand and Vidic's concentration.
A neat run from Larsson and a delightful through-ball from Rooney gives the Swede a sniff on goal, only for the linesman to raise his flag. Clever from United though, they look the more likely to open the scoring.
Vidic makes an awful attempt at a tackle on Odemwingie and earns himself a yellow card and Ryan Giggs wades in and adds his two-pennith worth.
It's all United now and Lille are struggling to get out of their own half. The midfield, led by Carrick, has taken the sting out of the home side's early zest.
The pitch wasn't watered before the game and the ball is pinging off the surface at a fair lick and it's causing one or two players to take an extra touch.
And the Swede forces a corner for United. Giggs will swing it in from the right. But it's well too deep and goes out for a throw.
United look keen to get on with business now. Carrick and Scholes are edging up the field and looking to play in Rooney and Larsson.
United starting to build some momentum now and Giggs' corner is nervously fisted away by Tony Sylva. Rooney is just starting to find some space in the gap just off the front two.
Back on the pitch and Wayne Rooney has his first sight on goal. Former Arsenal defender Efstathios Tavlaridis does well to put the striker off and it ends up going over the bar from the edge of the box.
Meanwhile, off the field there are massive problems in the stands. It's coming from the United end and it appears that there are too many supporters in that stand and they fear that they will be crushed with against the fence that surrounds the pitch. The police have gone over and reacted far too harshly and there is panic throughout that section of the stadium.
Ronaldo goes on a typically jinking and wizardry run but he's quickly smothered out.
Evra is in the book early as well. It was late, there was no contact and he can't complain.
It looks as if Lille have come with a plan to cross at every opportunity, and it's having an impact so far. But they'll have to get men on the end of them if they are to take advantage.
A good moment of pressure for Lille and a slight scare for Vidic and go. The crowd are bouncing and rightly so, two crosses from the Lille right and two moments of panic. First from Vidic and Neville but no decent effort on goal.
Long-range free-kick from Mathieu Bodmer and he slams it into the advertising hoardings. Poor!
Lille look as if they like to get it down and play. That could make for an interesting game, here's hoping.
Maybe it's those silly step-overs he persists with. He brings out the first of the night and wins his side a corner. Neville wastes it though.
Would you believe it! Even across the channel the home fans have taken to booing Cristiano Ronaldo. They're not too sure what they're booing for, but have taken to it with gusto.
A mionute later and Fauverge finds himself in the referee's book. It was a late challenge on Gary Neville and his foot caught the right-back's ankle. Ouch!
Nicolas Fauvergue forces Nemanja Vidic to make a decent blocked header. It was by no means a threatening header but Vidic had to be on his guard.
It's an impressive line-up for United tonight. They've recalled eight players that missed the FA Cup tie with Reading on Sunday.
Here we go then, United are in their changed strip of all white with the home side in United's preferred colours of red and black.
The reason we're in Lens is because Lille are having works carried out on their own stadium that is over 40 kilometres away. They won't be too pleased with the surface they're being made to play on however, it looks rock solid!
Sir Alex Ferguson can name just about his most ideal line-up. Henrik Larsson is given his Champions League debut while Edwin van der Sar returns in goal. Kick-off is minutes away and the stadium in Lens is buzzing.
