Weserstadion, Germany

  • 90'

That's it! Chelsea are beaten, but they're through. They'll be more worried about Drogba's injury. Werder now face a big, big game with Barcelona in Barcelona, which the Catalans must win to progress.

  • 90'

That is it! Chelsea are through but Werder win tonight to set up a big, big game with Barcelona (who must beat the Germans at the Nou Camp). Werder deserved their win, and Chelsea will be more concerned with Drogba's injury.

  • 90'

Werder substitution - Kalsnic for Klose.

  • 90'

Corner to Chelsea. Geremi takes it - and Terry jumps just under it.

  • 90'

Joe Cole is fouled by Wome. They have a free-kick on the right side of the Werder box.

  • 90'

Frings is bringing it forward. There's three minutes of injury time to play.

  • 90'

A Robben cross is headed up by Mertesacker and hoofed clear by Klose. They're desperate to cling on to this win.

  • 89'

Werder's fans are 'treating' us to a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'

  • 89'

If Werder hang on - and they look likely to - they'll have deserved this. They've been better than Chelsea.

  • 88'

Wright-Phillips wellies the ball out of play! I think it was supposed to be a pass, but I can't tell who to.

  • 88'

Schultz (a defender) on for Almeida (a striker). Werder look set to stick rather than twist.

  • 87'

Essien shoots just wide! He hit that beautifully.

  • 86'

Chelsea bring it away after a Diego dive - only to give it away to Almeida on the edge of their box. He has a go but shoots over.

  • 84'

Werder are looking to soak up time here.

  • 83'

Essien bursts down the right but is tackled by Wome.

  • 83'

The resultant free-kick is headed out.

  • 82'

    Wright-Phillips fouled by Wome.

  • 81'

Ashley Cole heads the ball back to Cuducini as Werder threaten down their right.

  • 79'

    Hunt is on for Werder.

  • 79'

Free-kick to Werder as Makelele fouls Klose.

  • 78'

Shevchenko gives it away. He has been poor since he came on.

  • 78'

    Wright-Phillips is on for Ballack.

  • 78'

Foul by Borowski on Shevchenko results in a yellow card for the former.

  • 76'

Wiese is forced to dive to his right as Cole strikes one after a decent run into the box! That's been one of Chelsea's best chances.

  • 74'

Makelele and Essien exchange passes in the middle of the park.

  • 73'

Robben jumps, but can't meet a Ballack cross. He was just too little.

  • 72'

Frings shoots over the bar after Diego orchestrates a nice Werder passing move. Diego has been the best player on the pitch.

  • 71'

Free-kick to Chelsea: Shevchenko forces Wiese into a fingertip save! It didn't seem that hard a shot, though: maybe the keeper didn't see it until quite late.

  • 69'

Ballack has hurt his foot in a clash with Wome. The Werder crowd don't seem too sympathetic.

  • 69'

Great 25-yard ball by Robben from the left is cut out just as Shevchenko sniffed a chance.

  • 68'

Werder look comfortable. Chelsea, by contrast, have been poor today.

  • 67'

A concerted period of Chelsea possession results in... nothing really, as the ball is given away down the left side.

  • 66'

Chelsea corner after a Robben cross is deflected behind.

  • 64'

Shevchenko falls under a challenge from Mertesacker, but there was nothing wrong with it. Excellent defending, in fact.

  • 63'

Diego is bundled over by Essien in the centre circle. Free-kick Werder.

  • 62'

Drogba is hobbling down the tunnel. Chelsea fans will hope it's not too serious.

  • 61'

Shevchenko's first involvement is to give the ball away as he tried to take on Werder down the left.

  • 60'

Joe Cole is not off. Mourinho must have changed his mind at the last moment - it's Drogba.

  • 59'

Mikel and Joe Cole off for Robben and Shevchenko.

  • 59'

Drogba's back on the turf - he landed uncomfortably after heading the ball. He doesn't look happy and is helped off the pitch.

  • 58'

A last-ditch tackle from Boulahrouz stops Jensen from shooting after more great work from Diego, who takes the resultant corner. It comes to naught.

  • 56'

Lovely dragback from Diego earns him a litle space in the box - but he shoots straight at Cudicini.

  • 55'

As is Arjen Robben. Drogba is strolling around a little bit gingerly, it must be said.

  • 54'

    Shevchenko is warming up.

  • 53'

Good work by Drogba puts Joe Cole in on the right-hand side of the box - but he opts to cut back rather than shoot and the chance is lost.

  • 52'

They're back up - it was nothing serious - and a drop-ball restarts the game.

  • 52'

Frings and Drogba are down on the turf after a nasty clash just inside the Werder half.

  • 51'

Lovely interplay by Werder comes to an end with a poor Frings cross. They still look sharp.

  • 50'

Boulahrouz fouls Klose to the left of the Chelsea box. The free-kick is wasted, however.

  • 49'

Ashley Cole goes down in the box - but jumps straight up. No suggestion of a penalty.

  • 48'

Cole is being marked by Ronaldo, who towers over the dimuative cockney.

  • 47'

Geremi fouls Jensen on the half-way line.

  • 47'

A poor cross-field ball by Terry gives Werder a throw-in deep in Chelsea's half.

  • 46'

    The second half is underway.

  • 45'

And that's the end of a first half that posed a number of questions. What happened to the Chelsea marking for Werder's goal? Do Chelsea want Barca to get knocked out? And how many Smurfs had to die so that Didier Drogba could have those football boots? Hmmm. It's a poser.

  • 45'

The game has died a little. Maybe both teams are ready for half-time.

  • 42'

Great bit of footwork by Joe Cole. Mikel passed the ball into him in the box and he wrongfooted the defender - only to hit a tame shot at Wiese in the Werder goal.

  • 41'

    Werder corner.

  • 40'

Good tackle from Terry after Diego had set Klose free in the box. Werder still look dangerous.

  • 39'

Drogba gets to Geremi's corner - but only gets a tiny slice of the ball, which goes out for a throw on the other side of the pitch.

  • 38'

Essien wins a corner after strong play from Drogba.

  • 37'

Frings takes a dive in the box. The ref's having none of it.

  • 36'

Foul by Geremi on Almeida on the edge of the Werder box, apparently, although it looked like play-acting from the latter to me.

  • 35'

Ballack didn't really catch that properly - it flicked off his knee. Wiese, who's a big lad, didn't have to work too hard to stop that one.

  • 33'

Ballack nearly scores! Great ball from Cole which Ballack headed at the keeper.

  • 31'

Cole on the attack, trying to cause problems down the left with his pace.

  • 30'

Foul by Klose on Makelele in the middle of the park.

  • 29'

Another dangerous cross - but this time Chelsea don't concede.

  • 27'

A header from a corner that was terribly defended by Chelsea - but it had been coming.

  • 26'

    Mertesacker scores!

  • 24'

    Cole caught offside.

  • 23'

Long ball to Drogba - but he's penalised for handball.

  • 22'

A cross by Wome is headed out of the box by Terry.

  • 21'

Drogba is wearing lovely shiny blue boots. Very shiny, indeed.

  • 21'

An aimless long-ball by Chelsea is followed by Werder bringing the ball upfield and winning a free-kick on the edge of the box. This is dangerous.

  • 19'

Free-kick to Chelsea. They need to get a grip on Diego, as he's looking the likeliest match-winner so far.

  • 18'

Almeida should have scored! Diego put him through, but he shot wide. Maybe Geremi put Almeida off.

  • 17'

The Werder fans are in good voice, and, not only that, they're bouncing up and down. Good on them.

  • 15'

Chelsea slow it down in the middle of the park, and well they might - I'd say Werder are more than edging it so far.

  • 14'

Swerving strike from Diego is well saved by Cudicini. This boy is good.

  • 13'

Good stuff from Diego - he took on and beat three Chelsea defenders down the right.

  • 12'

Wome with a throw-in. You just can't keep this man out of the game.

  • 11'

This is end-to-end stuff so far. Almeida is the latest to try his luck - a shot from the edge of the box just goes wide.

  • 10'

Mikel should have scored. Terry headed it back it him from the byline, and he just had to hit the target. But he missed.

  • 9'

I spoke too soon. Great cross by Wome causes panic in the Chelsea back four - but no goal.

  • 8'

Wome, once of Fulham, jogs down the left wing - and then gives it away, as he often did for Fulham during his brief period in south west London.

  • 7'

Essien with a decent shot. Was never going in, though.

  • 6'

    Corner headed clear by Drogba.

  • 5'

Werder are showing plenty of attacking intent in those first few minutes, and are rewarded with a corner.

  • 5'

Cole offside after some good work by Drogba.

  • 4'

Klose fouls Cole as they both chase a Werder long-ball.

  • 3'

Drogba loses his footing just as Mikel looks to set him away down the left. Get some new boots, son.

  • 2'

Joe Cole hares after a Drogba clearance, but to no avail.

  • 1'

Decent interception by Terry as the ball was rolled into Chelsea's box.

Werder to kick off - and they're away!

Here come the teams. A confused-looking lady carrying a ball got in the way of ref Lubos Michel as they walked out, but he didn't seem to mind.

Bremen striker Aaron Hunt is on the bench as coach Thomas Schaaf looks for goals from Germany international Miroslav Klose and Hugo Almeida.

Jose Mourinho has recalled troubled teenager Mikel John Obi for this UEFA Champions League clash with Werder Bremen in Germany. It is the teenager's first start since he was red-carded against Reading in the Barclays Premiership last month. Chelsea, requiring just a point to qualify for the next phase as Group A winners, have left Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko on the bench.
