UEFA Champions League

19:45 +00:00, February 23, 2005

Estadio Camp Nou, Spain

Referee: Anders Frisk

  • 93'

FULL TIME: Chelsea hold out for a 2-1 loss after being completely dominated for 90 minutes at the Nou Camp. Drogba's sending off was the turning point, but Mourinho should be content enough.

  • 92'

Lopez tries again from distance, but Terry blocks. A deep cross from Deco finds Eto'o unmarked at the back post, but his header is poor; well wide.

  • 91'

Carvalho makes a risky challenge inside his own box, but just gets the ball before the man. Iniesta fires in yet another powerful drive, Cech parries but the ball falls at the feet of a Chelsea man.

  • 90'

SUB: Smertin on, Thiago off. Thiago takes an age to leave the field, and is escorted half the way by Referee Frisk. Perhaps he was apologising for his poor decision to second Drogba off.

  • 89'

Three minutes of injury time will be played. Can Chelsea hold out? I think that the English club will be delighted with this result, considering the second-half barrage they've faced.

  • 88'

Iniesta sends over a dangerous cross; this time Carvalho decides to deal with the ball and he puts it out for a throw in. Thiago goes down with cramp.

  • 87'

Yet another low, accurate shot from distance is well saved by Cech. I've lost count of the amount of shots Barcelona have had in this second period. Barca win a corner when Ferreira takes no chances and puts a dangerous cross out of play.

  • 86'

Chelsea's Ferreira and Johnson double up on Ronaldinho after he is found in some space by Xavi. Their strength and determination win the visitors a goal-kick.

  • 85'

Xavi cracks in a hard, low shot from 25 yards, but Cech gets down well to his right to save inside the post.

  • 84'

Terry makes another vital, brilliant block after Van Bronkhorst clips in a dangerous cross towards Eto'o. The giant English defender goes down with a touch of cramp, but is up again soon after.

  • 83'

Maxi Lopez has been a real handful since he came on. He's playing up front with Eto'o and really putting himself about.

  • 82'

Ronaldinho finds more space on the left. His whipped ball in to the box falls at the feet of Lopez, but the substitute can't quite direct the cross past Cech.

  • 81'

Another Terry block, this time from a Xavi shot. Ronaldinho collects a loose ball and fires in a 20-yard shot, which Thiago deflects for a corner.

  • 79'

Some quite mesmerising skills on the left wing from Ronaldinho creates a little space for the Brazilian. His cross eventually finds Deco, but Terry throws his head in front of the Barca man's shot and Chelsea clear.

  • 78'

Belletti tries twice to get past Gallas, but the big French defender stands firm and the ball runs out for a goal kick.

  • 76'

Great defensive work from Makalele as he clears the danger. Gudjohnson has come on for Damien Duff, who was beginning to look a little tired.

  • 75'

A Chelsea striker has just scored in the Champions League - unfortunately it was Hernan Crespo, on loan at AC Milan, against Manchester United at Old Trafford...

  • 74'

Chelsea simply have to lash everything down now; Barcelona are throwing everything at the visitors. More safe hands from Cech to collect a long shot.

  • 73'

GOAL! Maxi Lopez's mis-hit shot is rammed home by Eto'o. Carvalho should have done far better; he had the chance to cut out the shot/cross, but he allowed it to run across him.

  • 71'

Johnson breaks for Chelsea but his through ball to Duff is too hard. Earlier, Cech reacts well to palm a dangerous cross away from the predatory Eto'o.

  • 70'

Deco is becoming a major player; he is linking everything up for the home side, sliding through balls in to space for rampaging Barca players to latch on to.

  • 69'

SUB: Cole off, Johnson on. A defensive substitution from Mourinho, brining Johnson on to try and defend the right side of Chelsea's back four.

  • 68'

Glen Johnson is stripping off his tracksuit on the Chelsea bench. The crowd are really behind the home side now.

  • 67'

Barcelona look a different side now. More crisp passing around the box works a little space for Iniesta, but his low shot is straight at Cech.

  • 66'

Maxi Lopez's first goal for the club has brought Barcelona right back in to the tie. They'll be pushing hard for a couple more before the final whistle.

  • 65'

GOAL! Maxi Lopez allows the ball to run across his body, beating Gallas, before firing a powerful shot past Cech.

  • 64'

Carvalho allows a deep cross to pass him by, only to find Deco waiting behind him. More frantic defending finally gets the ball away.

  • 63'

SUB: Maxi Lopez on, Giuly off. An Argentinian midfielder replaces the French forward. Iniesta fires narrowly wide under pressure from Terry.

  • 62'

Quick feet from Makalele finds the French midfielder a little space, but Gallas is caught a yard off-side as he chases down the through-ball down the left-wing.

  • 61'

Cech comfortably takes a Ronaldinho cross, but his long kick is 40 yards from the nearest English player. The Barca fans cry for a back-pass after an Eto'o ball deflects off Carvalho.

  • 60'

A poor touch from Ronaldinho gifts Chelsea a throw-in and the chance to relieve a little pressure. Mourinho looks very annoyed on the Chelsea bench.

  • 59'

Only Damien Duff is being left up-field as Chelsea try and get plenty men behind the ball.

  • 58'

Barcelona are enjoying a lot of possession 30 yards from Chelsea's goal, but they haven't been able to break the visitors down.

  • 56'

This will be a very tough final half-hour for the English side; they will have to defend for long periods without being able to risk too many players on counter-attacks.

  • 55'

Replays have shown it was a very harsh decision from the referee; Drogba got to the ball first but caught the goalkeeper on the way through. Coupled with a controversial first booking, Drogba can feel very hard done-by.

  • 54'

OFF! Duff teases Van Bronkhorst and sends over a teasing cross. Drogba lunges at a deft pass-pack from Belletti, but catches Valdes in the leg. A very harsh second booking results in red for the French striker.

  • 53'

Xavi picks up a loose ball and fires a 25-yard volley straight at Cech.

  • 52'

Referee Frisk becomes very annoyed at some perceived time-wasting from Chelsea. Joe Cole tries to find Drogba with a cute through-ball, but Puyol reads it well.

  • 51'

Cole breaks down the Chelsea right, but his cross is put out for a corner. Duff looks for Terry with the set-piece, but Barca clear.

  • 50'

Cech stays alert to pounce on a loose ball, while moments later Drogba fouls Marquez as they chased down a long ball. He needs to be careful, having been booked in the first half.

  • 49'

Eto'o wins a free-kick on the edge of the box as he is tripped by Carvalho. No arguments here. Ronaldinho stands over the set-piece, but his shot is wayward. Horribly wayward.

  • 48'

Cole shows considerable determination as he defends from the front, chasing down the loose balls and putting the Barcelona defenders under pressure.

  • 47'

Terry brilliantly reads Deco's through ball, though he gifts possession away immediately afterwards. Eto'o hits the deck as he bursts in to the box, eased off his feet by Gallas. No penalty.

  • 46'

Belletti, the scorer of the game'sonly goal, fouls Lampard on the half-way line. Duff is adjudged off-side as he burst down the left channel.

  • 45'

Chelsea kick off the second period. Barcelona will want to play at a higher tempo this half, and create a few more chances; so far they've been restricted mainly to shots from distance.

  • 45'

HALF-TIME: Damien Duff - the surprise starter for Chelsea - has played a major role in sending the visitors in 1-0 up at half-time, his low cross being turned in to the goal by Barca defender Belletti.

  • 44'

Cech does well to clear an awkward back-pass from Makalele. He was under pressure from a flying Eto'o.

  • 42'

Ronaldinho is beginning to drift off the left touchline and is trying to get more involved in the build-up play. Van Bronkhorst is pushing forward to play in the space he's left.

  • 41'

A brave header from Lampard puts Cole in to some space in the right of Barca's area. His attempted reverse pass is put out for a corner, but Barcelona defend well.

  • 40'

The atmosphere has changed considerably since the goal; it's much quieter inside the stadium at the moment. Having said that, the Chelsea fans really made themselves heard immediately after Belletti slid the ball in to his own net.

  • 39'

Albertini works a little space for a shot, but his long-range effort is straight at Cech.

  • 38'

Another Barca corner is easily defended by Chelsea, who are a much stronger, taller side than the Catalan XI.

  • 38'

Cole picks up a Drogba flick on, cuts inside on to his left foot but fires his shot well over the bar. Much better play from Chelsea.

  • 37'

Chelsea must be pinching themselves; they hadn't been near Barcelona's goal for over half-an-hour, and yet they now find themselves a goal-up. A real boost.

  • 36'

Deco is fouled, 30 yards out. Free-kick, slightly right-of-centre. Cech carefully positions his wall, which easily blocks Deco's drive.

  • 35'

Drogba could really have put the whole tie beyond Barcelona with a second away goal there. Perhaps he was a little rusty after his recent injury lay-off.

  • 34'

Noooo! Drogba is found by a great through ball from Duff, but the speedy striker wastefully blasts wide when one-on-one with Valdes.

  • 33'

Another Barcelona corner as Carvalho clears under pressure. Lampard tracks back and heads well clear. Barcelona will be livid to have gifted Chelsea an away goal.

  • 32'

GOAL! Deco pounces on a loose ball and fires a shot against Terry. Lampard picks up the ball, finds Duff with a long ball, and the Irish winger's right-wing cross is deflected in to the goal by Belletti.

  • 31'

Another Barcelona corner as Gallas blocks a run in to the box. Marquez rises high to meet the corner, but he heads high over the bar. He'll have been encouraged to beat John Terry in the air, however.

  • 30'

Half-an-hour gone, and Chelsea haven't managed a single shot on goal. Drogba breaks, but his pass to Duff is overhit and mis-directed.

  • 28'

Deco hits the floor after cutting in to the area and throwing himself over Thiago's challenge. Referee Frisk rejects 90,000 penalty claims, and quite rightly; it was a terrible dive.

  • 27'

Deco finds a little space, but his cross is blocked; corner. Chelsea defend well.

  • 26'

A deflected clearance from Ferreira almost falls at the feet of Ronaldinho, but Cech is alert once more to collect the loose ball. The Chelsea goalkeeper hasn't worked this hard all season.

  • 25'

Carvalho has to be sharp to deny Eto'o a shooting chance after a Giuly cross was deflected in the Chelsea area.

  • 23'

I don't think the Barcelona keeper, Valdes, has touched the ball so far. Chelsea have offered absolutely nothing in attack. They're giving the ball away far too easily.

  • 23'

Duff skips past a defender but falls to the floor under the challenge of a second. No free-kick, to Duff's annoyance. He slaps the ground and sulks in frustration.

  • 22'

Cech is out quickly to collect a through-ball from Ronaldinho, who was looking to slide Eto'o in to a promising position.

  • 20'

Chelsea are working very hard to cut down the space for Barcelona's playmakers. I think they'd be happy to take a 0-0 draw back to Stamford Bridge.

  • 18'

Drogba is down again, under a strong challenge in the air from Marquez. A few seconds later, Drogba is confronting the Mexican centre-back. Nothing too vicious, however.

  • 17'

Solid defending from Makalele prevents Giuly getting the cross in. Moments later, the Frenchman does swing over a cross but it's well defended by Carvalho.

  • 16'

Lampard lofts a through ball towards Cole, breaking through the middle, but the young English forward is off-side.

  • 15'

A long shot from Italian veteran Albertini flies high and wide over Cech's goal.

  • 14'

Albertini lofts a good ball in to the box and Eto'o, stretching and sprinting away from goal, volleys over.

  • 13'

Drogba is booked for a very soft challenge. A bad decision from the referee, and Drogba will have to be careful for the rest of the game.

  • 12'

Chelsea finally enjoy a bit of possession, but Terry gives the ball away in a dangerous area and Barcelona flood forward again. Two off-side decisions has the crowd on the linesman's back.

  • 11'

Ferreira is going to have his work cut out tonight; Barcelona seem to be lining up with three up-front, Ronaldinho on the left, with Giuly on the right.

  • 10'

Belletti swings over a deep cross, which finds its way to Ronaldinho at the far post. The Brazilian jinks and jockeys, but his stabbed shot drifts wide.

  • 8'

Thiago is warned by Referee Frisk after a clumsy challenge on Marquez. For what it's worth, I'm not an enormous fan of this particular referee. I hope he proves me wrong tonight.

  • 6'

First chance for Duff to run at his marker, but he's blocked off. It's a very open game at the moment; not what I expected at all.

  • 5'

Drogba crumples under a strong challenge, but there's no free-kick.

  • 4'

More superb skills from Ronaldinho, under pressure in the Chelsea area, creates a shooting chance for Eto'o. He fires high and wide, however. Chelsea looked ragged.

  • 3'

Ronaldinho finds some more space on the left-hand side for Barca; his low cross is curled in to a very dangerous area but Cech collects.

  • 2'

Already, Mourinho is jotting something down no a notepad on the Chelsea bench. I wonder what he's spotted? Lampard gives the ball away cheaply, and Ronaldinho fires a shot narrowly wide.

  • 1'

Joe Cole is lining up on the right side of a three-man attack for Chelsea. Gallas sneaks the ball back to Cech, under pressure from Guily.

We're off. Barcelona take possession in front of a full house in the Nou Camp. The pitch looks in superb condition, the atmosphere is excellent too.

Barcelona select the side Mourinho predicted in yesterday's pre-match press conference, with Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o leading the attack and Deco providing the passes from midfield.

In a major surprise, Damien Duff starts for Chelsea in place of Gudjohnsen. Was Jose Mourinho bluffing when he named his side yesterday, or did Duff make a spectacular recovery from his injury? Who knows?
