Chelsea are facing a hefty fine while Cesc Fabregas could yet be handed a three-match suspension after the mass brawl that marred the final minutes of Saturday's 3-1 win over Manchester City, a source has told ESPN FC.
Players and coaches from both clubs became embroiled in the scuffles that followed Sergio Aguero's high and late tackle on David Luiz at the Etihad Stadium, with the Argentine shown a straight red card by referee Anthony Taylor and Fernandinho also dismissed for grabbing Fabregas around the neck.
The FA has confirmed a four-game ban for Aguero, while Fernandino will miss City's next three matches.
Both clubs expect to be charged with breaching Football Association Rule E20, which relates to a failure to control players and/or officials. If they choose not to contest the charge, the standard fine for the offence is £20,000, though previous infringements also factor into the eventual punishments handed down.
Chelsea were fined £375,000 in May following a bad-tempered London derby with Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The figure was so large because it was the Blues' fifth separate breach of Rule E20 since November 2014.
It is not clear how many of Chelsea's previous offences will be taken into account this time, but the FA are certain to factor the Tottenham incident into any financial punishment, having also warned the Blues as to their future conduct when handing down the sanctions in May.
Fabregas, making his first appearance for Chelsea since September, was booked in the closing stages after becoming involved in the player melee when he attempted to pull Kelechi Iheanacho away from teammate Nathaniel Chalobah.
The Spaniard was then grabbed around the neck and eventually sent tumbling over the advertising hoardings by Fernandinho, but TV replays appeared to show the Chelsea midfielder provoking the Brazilian's angry reaction with a slap to the face.
It is FA policy not to retrospectively sanction any player for an offence punished by the referee at the time, but if the official states in his report that he booked Fabregas for a separate infringement and did not see the slap, the Chelsea man could still face a charge of violent conduct.
Diego Costa fell foul of a similar process in September 2015, following a clash with Gabriel Paulista during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Gabriel was sent off for kicking out at Costa, who was booked by referee Mike Dean. But the Chelsea striker was then handed a three-game ban after Dean stated that he would have dismissed the striker if he had seen a separate act of aggression towards Laurent Koscielny moments earlier.
Taylor's report will be reviewed before any decisions are taken on disciplinary action, and the FA have until Tuesday evening to bring charges.
