Liverpool's Joel Matip undecided on African Nations Cup - source

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is to decide whether he will compete for Cameroon at the upcoming African Nations Cup after holding talks with coach Hugo Broos, a source has told ESPN FC.

Matip, 25, has not played for his country since 2015 and spoke in September about his desire to stay at Liverpool during the African Nations Cup in order to be able to fully focus on his first season at Anfield.

However, Cameroon manager Hugo Broos recently told Sport/Voetbalmagazine that he hoped to meet Matip and convince him to end his international exile.

The source said that Broos and Matip held talks last week, with the manager, ultimately, leaving it up to the player to decide whether to accept the invitation of being a part of preliminary 35-man squad, which is selected next week.

Liverpool did not comment when asked by ESPN FC.

The centre-back has been exceptional for Jurgen Klopp's side this campaign following his free transfer from Schalke in the summer.

Liverpool have only lost two Premier League games so far this season -- at Burnley and Bournemouth -- with Matip not featuring in either match.

Meanwhile, his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane will playing for Senegal at the tournament, which takes place in Gabon between Jan. 14 and Feb. 5.
