Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan has knee surgery, facing 4 months out

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has undergone knee surgery and is set to miss at least four months of action.

Germany international Gundogan, 25, dislocated his knee cap in training a fortnight ago, and has been ruled out of Euro 2016.

The deep-lying playmaker has just over 12 months left on his current deal at Dortmund, and is now set to spend time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to his injured knee on Friday, kicker reported.

The magazine added that Gundogan could be out of action until mid-October, and the report was confirmed by Borussia Dortmund later on Friday.

Gundogan was widely reported to have been set for a summer switch to future Pep Guardiola club Manchester City before sustaining the injury.

Dortmund have offered Gundogan a new long-term deal and told him they are unwilling to go into the new season with the midfielder's future undecided.

On Thursday, BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told kicker the club are delaying the Gundogan decision for now.

"We will postpone the plans until he is more or less recovered," he said.
