Buried amid the outpouring of anger towards the new badge, the pre-season tour of America effectively slipped under the radar when announced. The tour confirmation arrived on the same day as the badge unveiling, yet participation in a stellar pre-season tournament became an afterthought due to the divisive badge. Partaking in an impressively assembled pre-season tournament, featuring several of the biggest clubs in world football, the news should have been a feather in the cap of the club, but it was drowned out by badge-gate.

Ask a football supporter for their best and worst months of the year and the answer would probably be overwhelming; August-May as the best months with June and July as the worst. Counting down the days until the 2013-14 fixtures announcement provides some indication of the withdrawal symptoms found in the average football fan. Less than a month since the end of the Premier League season and already the tedium is setting in. Weekends feel empty without football; no match on the horizon to ease the pain of the working week, no pre-match/post-match pint, no reason to vent opinion or frustration.

International attention turns to the Under-20 World Cup later this month following the dismal display of the England Under-21 side in the recent European Championships. The tournament starts on 21st June with England playing their first match on 23rd against Iraq; the remainder of Group E comprises of Chile and Egypt. Five of the 21-man England squad find themselves on the Everton books. The club academy is known for producing several talented youngsters over the years, though not all fulfill their potential, the players chosen are testament to the potential within the Goodison setup.

Colin Fitzpatrick proceeded to explain how "nobody in the local press supports us". He expanded his point. "The things that matter, the things that have destroyed the club, which I've just shown you, we know they [Liverpool Echo] know the answers." The Blue Union met with the Liverpool Echo around two months ago and provided a series of extensive questions relating to the club. However, they feel there has been no progress on this front: "They won't report it, that's fine." - The Blue Union public meeting - Part one Ending his financial section on a resounding note, the Blue Union Press Officer proclaimed: "I know what I'm going to be doing in the future.

Independent fan group The Blue Union held their fourth public meeting in Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. The meeting covered an array of issues, including a thoroughly entertaining question and answer session with special guest Neville Southall. Dave Kelly and Colin Fitzpatrick, the two Blue Union speakers on the day, also formed the Keep Everton in Our City campaign during the Kirkby debacle. The group successfully exposed the major flaws within the doomed project and the meeting began with a nod towards the role of such groups.

Roberto Martinez made all the right noises during his first press conference on Wednesday. Clear on his future intentions, the ambitious nature of the man shone brightly as Martinez outlined his reasons for accepting the Everton job. The positive statements made for a refreshing change. Somewhat of a pragmatist, David Moyes often spoke of reaching 40 points and going from there. Martinez instantly targeted Champions League football, though quick to remind those present that the process will not happen overnight; few could argue with the merits of either statement.

Notwithstanding the Monday evening charade -- when Wigan owner Dave Whelan managed to steal the media spotlight once more with his claim (an incorrect one, according to Everton) that Wigan already had agreed to a compensation package -- the ink is now finally drying on a contract, and Roberto Martinez is the new manager at Goodison Park. The appointment signals the start of a new era, and the Spaniard has signed a four-year deal. Using a topical managerial moniker as a yardstick, Martinez is either the "potentially special one" or the "not so special one," depending on the viewpoint.

This may sound familiar -- player talks up a transfer, player receives hairdryer treatment from club boss; player proclaims innocence and proceeds to explain the appalling misquotes befalling them. For some unknown reason, Premier League footballers speak as if everyone, especially the press, respects the concept of 'What’s said in Europe stays in Europe'. Unfortunately for them, that is not the case as irate managers bring their ego-boosted players back down to earth upon their return to England.

The early afternoon developments on the managerial front were heaven-sent. In all honesty, any news is welcome at present, whether it is about a new manager or additional lawnmowers, it does not matter. Anything providing a break from badge-gate is a relief. Boasting a tower similar to the residence of a Lord of the Rings character, the vast majority of supporters voiced their displeasure towards the new design. - Jolly on Martinez exit The badge petition has over 23,000 signatures, there is a Twitter account edging towards 5,000 followers, and 91% of supporters on fan site Toffeeweb either disliked or hated the badge; the poll comprised of over 12,000 supporters.

Pre-season often generates excitement among supporters, but the news released on Saturday covered both ends of the spectrum. A pre-season tournament including Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Real Madrid slipped under the radar; the radar swamped amid outrage over the design of the new badge. Much to the annoyance of the club, the current design leaked into the public domain months ago; the redesign process began as early as autumn 2012. Although inconvenient, this slip gave the opportunity to question the fan-base and gauge opinion; something the club failed to do, contrary to their release day protestations.

Well-placed in January, there was a clear sense of frustration among Everton supporters when the season finished. The League Cup campaign stalled in second gear, the league results dented hopes and the Wigan horror show saw the wheels come off. Season over -- these are just some of the factors that played a part in Everton missing out on Europe. Goals Nikica Jelavic breathed fresh life into the attack when he arrived in January 2012 thanks to an unnerving first-time finishing ability. Howard Kendall turns 67 on Wednesday; Kendall spent 17 years at Everton as player, player-manager and manager. Harry Catterick signed Kendall from Preston North End in 1967; edging out Bill Shankly’s Liverpool for the highly rated 20-year old.
