An olympian saga

So the Olympic Stadium decision suffers yet another delay in the ongoing soap opera that just keeps us hanging on.

Whilst the debate about the stadium has been done to death, there are still many West Ham fans who flat out do not want to leave Upton Park. I am not adverse to change and do not understand how any Hammers fan could give a categorical 'No' when they do not know what the changed Olympic Stadium would be like.

Surely if the venue is developed and fit for football then it becomes a bit of no-brainer. Of course it will be heart-breaking leaving The Boleyn Ground but where was the sentimentality when three stands were being ripped down over the last 20 years? It is certainly not the same place fans were going to in the 70's and 80's.

There have been so many arguments for and against the Olympic Stadium but for me whether it is fit to hold football matches, or remains an athletics venue that also houses a football team, remains the key point.

There have been a few polls on fan websites claiming that 'clearly' the majority of West Ham fans are opposed, but the total number of votes cast isn't even 2500. Baring in mind that there are around 30,000 at home games and at Wembley for the Play Off Final there was in excess of 50,000, this obviously isn't a fair representation of West Ham fans as a whole.

So many London clubs are looking to move home because of the need to increase capacity and revenue. Arsenal managed to do it but Tottenham, Chelsea, QPR, Brentford, AFC Wimbledon and even Barnet are all searching for new homes and finding it difficult.

West Ham has a chance to move into a stadium practically on the club's door step and one which would be iconic. If the club do not move now it's difficult to see them ever doing so. Some will say they are happy with that and would like to keep West Ham a small, happy go lucky, East London cockney club who remain stagnant in their progress.

It's important to respect history, and West Ham United's is long and proud. And recent comments from Sam Allardyce regarding forgetting the past and taking down pictures of former greats from the tunnel do not sit well, but a move to a new stadium would surely see us progress - at least off the field.

Moving to a bigger ground will not make West Ham a big club or a successful one. But at the same time it gives the club a better chance and there is certainly more chance of the club finding big investment if it is in the Olympic Stadium - Similarly Manchester City.

If the Olympic Stadium remains with a running track then I would be totally opposed to the move as this would be a disaster. But if they get this right and West Ham can move into a state of the art football stadium then it can't be bad news for the club.

Some supporters will not be swayed by the Olympic Stadium and I do not write this to try and convert them. If West Ham do stay at Upton Park I will not be crying into my beer but at the same time I am intrigued to see what it would be like to move into a stadium (fit for football of course) such as the one that stands in Stratford.
