Video: Frickley defender scores stupendous 45-yard own goal

With top-flight football across the world clocking off for a two-week international lull, Toe Poke have had to scour the lower leagues for our weekly fix of outrageous own-goal gaffes -- a dragnet that eventually led us to Frickley Athletic's Evo-Stik Northern Premier League tie against FC United of Manchester at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon.

We join the action with Frickley’s Steven Gardner on the ball on the half-way line after chasing down a clearance, with the defender looking to have things under control despite the close presence of FC United's Rhodri "Yes, I'm Ryan's brother" Giggs.

Without so much as breaking a sweat, Gardner effortlessly sweeps up the loose ball and fires a stupendous shot back towards his own goal from a clear 45 yards out, which loops high over stranded Frickley keeper Tom Woodhead and into the back of the vacant net.

Textbook stuff.

For the record, Frickley went on to lose 3-0. On this evidence, it's not particularly surprising!
