Video: Muddy goalmouth saves Lithuanian team from cup exit

In a scene sure to jog miserable memories for thousands of ex-Sunday League players out there, Lithuanian side VMFD Zalgiris Vilnius were spared being jettisoned from the domestic cup when the huge muddy bog strategically placed in front of their goal made a spectacular save with 10 minutes left in their quarterfinal tie against FK Kruoja Pakruojis on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing 1-0 at home, Zalgiris appeared to be staring elimination in the face when, as the clock ticked into the 81st minute, Kruoja striker Ricardas Beniusis latched onto a long ball and rolled the ball past the charging Zalgiris keeper toward the empty net.

Assuming a goal would be a formality, Beniusis even began to raise an arm in celebration before Zalgiris' "12th man" stopped the ball dead in the goalmouth until the home side's keeper could casually wade over and gather the ball from the puddle ...

To make matters worse for Kruoja, their newly invigorated opponents then capitalised on their good fortune. Zalgiris blitzed Kruoja with a late flurry to come from behind and win with goals in the 89th and 90th minutes to advance to the semifinals.

It never rains, but it pours ... especially in Zalgiris' 18-yard box!
