Match of the Day go ridiculously overboard in hyping Hodgson appearance

Posted by Chris Wright

With Roy Hodgson appearing on the Match of the Day sofa on Saturday evening opposite host and arch-England critic Gary Lineker, it's perhaps understandable that the BBC would try and butter up their reluctant guest a little bit to help put him at ease on the right-hand sofa.

Frankly, however, some of the achievements attributed to the England manager in the MotD captions were nothing short of brazen and outrageous lies, which a Telegraph Sport Twitter follower noticed ...

We know that our memories are a little checkered and that Hodgson's playing days were slightly before our time, but still -- we don't recall him banging them in willy-nilly post-1992.

Lies, we say! Damned lies!
