Video: Eredivisie referee silences coach by holding up 'Respect' armband

In the aftermath of the bewilderingly tragic death of amateur linesman Richard Nieuwenhuizen a fortnight ago, respect for officials is very much a sticking point in Dutch football at the moment.

With FC Groningen's coach Robert Maaskant chuntering away on the touchline during their game against VVV Venlo at the weekend, referee Serdar Gozubuyuk halted play, marched over to the technical area and made a point of showing Maaskant his 'Respect' armband.

It soon shut the Groningen coach up...

Gozubuyuk has faced a fair bit of criticism for his am-dram flourish, with several pundits suggesting his gesture was over the top considering that Maaskant was only contesting a free-kick decision and that the Turkish ref cannot stride around brandishing his armband every time he's on the pongy end of any criticism.

Our verdict? You go, Mr. Referee!
