Much Edu about nothing

Maurice Edu seems to be the latest addition to our ever growing squad and whilst everyone is desperate for new faces to freshen the team up many are writing off the former Rangers man before he has even pulled on his shirt.

Whilst Edu wasn't a stand out performer in a Championship winning Rangers side, the role he would play in a Tony Pulis team would be entirely different. At Rangers the whole side were expected to decimate all that stood before them, every player had a chance of scoring and there was a strong emphasis on attack, especially from the midfielders.

Should Edu play in midfield his game would more likely consist of sitting in front of the back four and breaking up play. It may well be he isn't being signed exclusively for the midfield given the fact that Pulis has mentioned that he can play anywhere across the back line too and at a time when he is being urged to trim the squad, verstaile players will be needed more than ever.

I ask the fans to give Maurice a chance, he isn't being brought in for the first team but I know I would rather see someone with his pedigree lining up than some of the lesser lights we've been seeing featuring for us over the last few years.

We should also appreciate the fact that he has a fellow countryman in the form of Geoff Cameron here and given the problems we had with Arismendi settling in, the signing could prove a shrewd move in helping our new midfielder settle. The fact that they know each other on and off the pitch can only be a positive and they played very well together against Mexico in the centre of defence keeping the likes of Hernandez quiet so offer us an alternative partnership at the back if ever required.

We have to appreciate that we have some good players now and bringing in new faces who are happy to feature only sporadically is a big challenge for the manager and in Edu I think we have made a good move..... although I reserve the right to moan like a drain should he be plonked straight into the left back berth.
