03.08 BST: DONE DEAL! A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers have signed former Sydney FC and North Queensland Fury striker Brendon Santalab on a one-year deal. The 30-year-old returns to Australia after spending four years in China with Chengdu Blades and Chongqing Lifan.
Liverpool have made a move for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa with British media reporting that the Reds have triggered the release clause in the Brazilians contract. According to multiple outlets, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has offered the Spanish club in the region of £22 million for the 24-year-old as he continues to revamp his attacking options. And with the fee activating the player's release clause, it's expected the two clubs could quickly come to an agreement. And despite Costa being the expected third forward to be brought to the club - after the acquisitions of Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto - this summer, the Daily Mail is reporting that want-away striker Luis Suarez will stay with the club. The transfer saga revolving around the Uruguay international continues to drag towards the start of the Premier League but the Anfield club remain determined to keep the 26-year-old. However, according to the Mirror, Suarez is determined to find an exit out of the club, believing the club would let him go if a rival met that magic £40 million mark.
Meanwhile, it's not only their strikers that the Reds' rivals are eyeing, with the Mirror claiming Spanish champions Barcelona are back again for Daniel Agger. Speculation was rife earlier in the year that the Catalan giants were after the Danish defender, but those rumours cooled as Barcelona started to chase Chelsea defender David Luiz. But with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho issuing a 'hands off' ultimatum to his former foes, Agger is again in their sights. And a deal involving Agger would cost a fraction of the price needed to lure Luiz to the Nou Camp, tempting the Spaniards to make a play before another club joins the race.
Talking of defenders, The Daily Express is reporting that Manchester City are chasing Cagliari's Davide Astori as cover for the inured Matija Nastasic. The 20-year-old Nastasic was hurt during City's recent Asian tour and is racing to be fit for the start of the Premier League. And with City manager Manuel Pellegrini unsure if he can call on the services of the Serbia international, Astori could be brought in as a quick fix. Astori has played over a hundred games for the Serie A club, and has been called up the Italy national squad on five occasions.
