Arsene Wenger has been given permission by Arsenal to make a £40 million bid for Liverpool's Luis Suarez, according to reports in the British media.
You have to give props to Wenger for his persistence. Liverpool continue to deny Suarez is for sale and claim only a significant bid (believed to be over the £50 million mark) could lure the Uruguay international away from Anfield. But Wenger is set to make another audacious bid after reportedly having offers of £30 million and £35 million rejected by the Reds. According to the Daily Mail, Wenger is prepared to test the apparent release clause in Suarez's contract - which Liverpool deny could be activated with a £40 million bid - and he has the backing of Arsenal's board to do so.
But Wenger's temperament will surely be tested as the Sun reports Liverpool will not accept less than £55 million for Suarez, following manager Brendan Rodgers' comments that Edinson Cavani's move to PSG sets the benchmark in terms of price.
Once the Suarez saga is sorted, Rodgers has another battle to fight - keeping centre-back Daniel Agger. The Sun says Barcelona are preparing to make a £12 million approach for the Dane, as the Spanish champions' pursuit of a central defender continues. With a move for PSG captain Thiago Silva appearing to have fallen through, Agger could be the next on Barca's hitlist, although Liverpool have no plans of letting their defender go.
Chelsea are the latest club to be linked with Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain, despite their chase for Wayne Rooney gathering momentum. Napoli are keen to sign Higuain after approaches from Juventus and Arsenal failed to yield a contract, although a source has been quoted as saying "Mourinho wants him there".
Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is eager to be reunited with Pepe Reina and could make a play for the Liverpool goalkeeper after failing to sign QPR's Julio Cesar. The Daily Mail says Benitez will take advantage of the growing uncertainty surrounding Reina's future, where the Spain international will be offered Champions League football and regular playing time. The arrival of Simon Mignolet at Liverpool raised further doubts over Reina's position.
