Arsenal appear to have lost the race to sign Barcelona striker David Villa after the Spain international was offered a new contract by the La Liga leaders.

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona are on the verge of extending Villa's £7 million-a-year contract after the 31-year-old returned from injury. That news would be a blow for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, who was hoping to snatch Villa away from Spain in the summer to bolster his attacking options ahead of the start of the new season.

All this said, Villa is reported to be after a more permanent starting position, and may decide a move away from Barcelona is his best option..

Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak could be on his way out of Reading, with a move to Zenit St Petersburg in his homeland more than likely, the Daily Mirror reports. Pogrebnyak has failed to settle at Reading, scoring only five goals since last year's move from Stuttgart, which followed a loan spell at Fulham.

With the Royals facing relegation, the club want to move the 29-year-old on, given his £65,000-a-week salary.

Finally, Premier League minnows Southampton and Norwich are reported to be chasing Walsall's Will Grigg.

According to Daily Mirror, the 21-year-old striker is starting to make a name for himself after scoring 19 goals this season, with a number of Premier League and Championship clubs sending scouts to keep a track of the Northern Ireland international.

And with the Saints and the Canaries the latest clubs to show an interest, Grigg, who is out-of-contract this summer, may just decide to leave the League One club. Norwich are also interested in signing Birmingham City's Chris Burke, who is out of contract in June, and Curtis Davies.
