Carra set for TV deal
PA PhotosJamie Carragher will hang up his boots at the end of the season The end is nigh for Liverpool's Jamie Carragher, with the defender announcing his retirement from football, effective at the end of the current season. The question on everyone's lips now, of course, is where to next for the Reds stalwart. A report in the Daily Mail claims Sky Sports are set to snap up the new retiree as a television pundit. It is said BT Sport are also interested in securing Carragher's services, but Sky boss Barney Francis is prepared to do whatever it takes to come to an arrangement with the 35-year-old.
Arsenal are shopping too, and Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic has emerged as their top target of the summer. The Daily Mirror states that, following numerous attempts to lure Barcelona's David Villa to the Emirates in January, Arsene Wenger is now looking to Jovetic to solve their striking problems. The 23-year-old is eight years younger than Villa and Wenger is set to splash the cash at the end of the season. Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and Marseille defender Nicolas N'koulou are also believed to be on Wenger's wish-list.
Meanwhile, there could be a return to the Gunners for Patrick Vieira or Dennis Bergkamp, but not in the way you may think. The former Arsenal stars are in line to replace Liam Brady as head of youth development at the London club, according to the Daily Mail. Vieira currently works as Manchester City's football development executive, but is keen to return to his old club.
The Daily Star reports that Aston Villa star Christian Benteke has decided to leave the club. The news is set to spark a £16 million race to sign the striker, with Chelsea and Arsenal understood to be at the front of the pack, while La Liga side Atletico Madrid view the Belgian as the ideal replacement for Radamel Falcao, who seems certain to move on.
