Paul Scholes is reportedly ready to call it quits on his football career, for the second time in as many years. But this time he means it, according to the Sun. Scholes first hung up the boots at the end of last season but returned to the Manchester United line-up after a bad dose of football-withdrawal syndrome. The 38-year-old has only started seven games this season, however, and is believed to be ready to retire after more than 700 appearances for United. With playing opportunities at a premium, it's believed that Ryan Giggs could also follow Scholes out of Old Trafford.

According to the Mirror, meanwhile, Newcastle have swooped for Marseille striker Loic Remy in a deal reportedly worth £10 million. Alan Pardew is said to be preparing a bid for Remy next month to compensate for the likely departure of Demba Ba. The Toon were forced to fend off interest from West Ham, QPR and Tottenham for the 25-year-old's signature, with Ba's recent comments about his side's style of play apparently angering the Newcastle players and moving him closer to an exit from St James' Park. Marseille are willing to cash in on Remy before his contract runs out at the season's end after rejecting Tottenham's £20 million bid during the summer.

Andre Santos has been on the fringes of Arsene Wenger's line-up since that infamous half-time shirt swap with Robin van Persie. While the Brazilian would like to think Wenger's decision was based on that act, his poor defensive abilities have been the driving force behind his extended stint on the sidelines - not a good position for a defender. Galatasaray have pledged to give the 29-year-old a shot at redemption, offering Arsenal £2.5 million to return to Turkey in January, the Mirror reports. Santos joined Arsenal from Fenerbahce in 2011 and has no desire to leave the Gunners, but he could be forced into taking the offer.
