Paper round-up: Knowing me, knowing you, Zaha
GettyImagesWilfried Zaha: A product of the the Palace youth system As Arsenal's season continues to dip into a crisis it must feel like Groundhog Day for the supporters, but fear not because the Daily Mail reports that Arsene Wenger is ready to unleash a transfer war chest on the January window.
Wenger is hardly known for splashing the cash midway through a season, with the capture of Andrei Arshavin on a snowy February day in 2009 the only time he has spent big in the winter. But needs must and with the Gunners eighth and already 11 points behind leaders Manchester United, targeting fourth place is surely Arsenal’s true trophy hunt once again.
So the rumour is that Wenger will make a move for Crystal Palace's flying winger Wilfried Zaha, who won his first full England call-up on Sunday. Only three weeks ago Eagles co-chairman Steve Parish warned Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City that he would accept no less than £20 million for Zaha, which seems an unlikely spend by Wenger.
And he is also linked with a move for Edin Dzeko, Man City's super-sub who has made no secret of his desire to play from the start. However, as Dzeko has already featured for City in the Champions League this season and would be cup-tied for Arsenal that would surely remove some of the attraction. And, of course, the fact City would want back most of the £27 million they paid Wolfsburg.
Elsewhere, the Daily Mirror claims that Manchester United could renew their interest in Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski, with the player reluctant to sign a new contract with his Bundesliga club. Just how exactly the Polish forward would fit in with Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck is not explained in the report.
And finally, Frank Lampard is currently on the sidelines at Chelsea due to injury, but the Sun reports the England midfielder is moving closer to a transfer to Chinese football, where Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba have already been put out to pasture. Guizhou Rehne are prepared to pay the 34-year-old a staggering £250,000-a-week.
