Manchester United are confident that star striker Wayne Rooney is ready to open negotiations over a new bumper contract.

Amid rumours that the club is ready to cull a number of first-team players in the coming January window, Rooney is being targeted as one player whom United do not want to see leave Old Trafford. According to the Daily Mail, the England international is set to be offered a four-year deal worth a whopping 50 million pounds.

Rooney could soon be welcoming some new faces, with the Daily Star reporting the club is interested in Everton's Ross Barkley while the Mirror suggests Inter Milan's Fredy Guarin and Real Madrid's Sami Khedira are on the radar.

But United will not have it all their own way. According to the Mirror, Guarin is also being chased by Chelsea and Khedira is being targeted by Arsenal. Inter officials were spotted at Stamford Bridge recently, with the 27-year-old Guarin the point of interest. The Colombia international is expected to fetch a 15 million pound price tag. Meanwhile, Khedira could soon call London home with long-time admirers Arsenal hoping to tempt the injured midfielder to join good mate Mesut Ozil at the Emirates.

Newcastle are looking closer to home and have become the first reported team to show interest in Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov. The former Tottenham and Manchester United striker has become disillusioned with life at Craven Cottage and is looking for a January move away. According to the Mirror, Newcastle are more than willing to bring the 32-year-old in to join the likes of Papiss Cisse, Loic Remy and Shola Ameobi.

Finally, Bayern Munich could beat a host of Premier League clubs for young Hoffenheim sensation Kevin Volland. According to the Mirror, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham have all shown interest in the 21-year-old winger. But now that Bundesliga giants Bayern have entered the race, don't expect the young speedster to leave Germany any time soon.
