Paper round-up: Adieu to Chelsea two?
It could be goodbye to Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later for two Chelsea stalwarts, according to the Sun, with the club offering neither Ashley Cole nor Frank Lampard the longer-term contracts they want.
The paper says midfielder Lampard and left-back Cole will not be exempt from Chelsea’s policy of offering deals of no more than a year to players over the age of 30.
And with Twitter fan Cole aged 31 and Lampard 34 - and both being in the final year of their deals - both could be off on free transfers in the summer, with both free to open talks with interested clubs in January.
Lampard has been linked with a move to China, where he could join former team-mates Dider Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, while clubs including Paris St Germain are said to be interested in Cole.
The Sun reports a Chelsea source as saying: “Frank and Ashley are still very important to Chelsea, but if they stay it will only be on the club’s terms.
“Didier held out for more than one year last season and was given a take it or leave it offer. The owner has made it clear the same will apply to Frank and Ashley.”
The Mail, meanwhile, says Liverpool could move to augment their threadbare striking options by bringing in South Korea forward Son Heung-min from Bundesliga club Hamburg.
The paper reports that the Merseysiders have been monitoring the 20-year-old, who can also play on the wing.
And the Mirror says Wolves could be ready for a double swoop in the loan market, with Manchester United’s Robbie Brady and Arsenal’s Emmanuel Frimpong their targets.
Manager Stale Solbakken wants to strengthen his wide options, and sees left-sided United midfielder Brady, 20, as an ideal solution.
The paper quotes him as saying: “We have done some research and we’ll see this week if it’s possible.”
Frimpong also had a spell on loan at Molineux last season as Wolves suffered relegation from the Premier League, but it was cut short by injury after only five games.
