United in frame for Eindhoven midfield star

Manchester United could be ready to make a January swoop for PSV midfielder Kevin Strootman, whose club have given him the go-ahead to move during the January transfer window.

Strootman, 22, was one of the stars of the show for the Eindhoven outfit last season, attracting interest from clubs including Real Madrid and AC Milan. He has also played for Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht.

But the Daily Mail believes the Netherlands international’s most likely destination is Old Trafford and that, if United meet his club’s valuation, he will join Sir Alex Ferguson’s ranks.

The player’s agent, Chiel Dekker, made it clear that Strootman was looking for a new challenge, saying: “He has had a good time in Eindhoven, but he decided that he wants to prove himself in a better league.

“If an agreement is able to be reached with a potentially interested club, PSV will allow Kevin to leave in January.”

Also in the Mail, and on the other side of Manchester: could Kolo Toure be gearing up for a move away from Manchester City?

The former Arsenal man, who missed six months at the start of last season because of a drugs ban, has fallen to fourth in City’s central defensive pecking order, and isn’t feeling too thrilled about that.

He was linked with a move to Turkey over the summer - with Galatasaray and Bursaspor reported to have been in the frame - and the Mail quotes him as saying: “Joleon [Lescott] and Vincent [Kompany] have been fantastic and deserve their place, but it’s much harder when a young player comes and steps in front of you.

“Since I came back from the problem I had, I’ve been fourth choice every time and that’s been really difficult. It’s hard to come in and give your best.

“I feel I can still get into the team. Ask anybody. Every day at training I give everything. It’s hard, but that is the manager’s choice - what can I do? I need to work hard, and that’s alright by me. It’s up to me to prove to the manager that I am still one of the best.”
