Ronaldo leads Real Madrid over Barcelona to the Copa del Rey final

Posted by Antonio Rusinol, ESPN Stats & Information

Real Madrid eliminated Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal with a convincing 3-1 victory in Barcelona’s Camp Nou. The victory is Real Madrid’s biggest win at Barcelona since a 2-0 win in the 2002 Champions League semifinal.

Barcelona’s loss snaps a 22-game home unbeaten streak that dates to last season when it also lost at home to Real Madrid in league play. The Catalan club hadn’t lost a Copa match at home since a 2-1 loss to Sevilla in January 2010.

The star that shined the brightest on Tuesday was Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the first two goals of the match for Real Madrid. The Portuguese superstar has scored in seven of his past eight Clasicos and is tied for seventh all-time with 12 career goals in El Clasico.

Ronaldo has been phenomenal at Camp Nou, finding the back of the net in each of his past six visits. He’s scored a brace in his past two matches at the Barcelona stadium. With his goals today, Ronaldo ties Lionel Messi with 13 goals in their 22 head-to-head meetings.

Raphael Varane capped off the night for Madrid with his goal in the 68th minute. It was a historic goal for the 19-year-old center back, who scored for the second consecutive Clasico. It was a night to forget for Messi, who failed to get a shot on goal for just the second time this season and the second time in the last week (against Milan in Champions League play). Messi has never scored in a Copa del Rey Clasico in five matches.

Real Madrid was able to get revenge on Barcelona for its elimination in last year’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal. Los Blancos advance to their record 38th Copa del Rey final on May 18. Real Madrid will face the Sevilla-Atlético Madrid winner -- those teams play Wednesday.
