Nearly man Osman finally gets the nod
PA PhotosLeon Osman was a surprise inclusion in the England squad for the friendly against Sweden Around three weeks ago, I used this blog to write about Leon Osman and his chances of an England call-up. At the age of 31, it seemed the England ship had sailed with a lack of consistency and advancing years holding him back. But what do I know? The midfielder found himself in the England squad announced this week.
- Neville and Distin back Osman call-up
More than warranted on current form, the call-up still surprises to a degree with Osman overlooked for many years. For me, his inability to nail down a regular midfield berth at Everton and his frustratingly inconsistent performances were the main reason for constant England snubs. Finally, Osman appears to have overcome both obstacles with a regular place and consistent form.
In the absence of Darron Gibson, who looks set to return for next weekend's trip to Reading, Osman and captain Phil Neville have formed the central midfield partnership. When Gibson returns, Neville should be the one to make way. That is testament to the recent form of Osman with the diminutive midfielder making the central midfield spot his own after years of misuse in wide areas.
Now, performing to a high level on a weekly basis, Osman is arguably in the form of his career. Known for his quick feet and close control, the Wigan-born midfielder can often find himself accused of being lightweight. However, in recent games, Osman has also shown a different and more pleasing side to his game.
With renewed purpose and a seemingly newfound tackling ability, Osman is the player driving Everton forward of late. Attempting 27 tackles with 78% accuracy, a player known for his creative talents is showing up some of his team-mates; no Everton player has attempted or won as many tackles this season.
Winning 50 of his 50/50 battles for possession, Osman also leads the way in that category. The last two matches have seen his best outputs yet with four tackles attempted against Liverpool and six at Fulham. In the draw at Fulham, Osman lead the way in all the main tackling categories and that is all the more impressive given his small stature.
Whilst displaying much-improved defensive traits, the attacking aspects have not diminished; this again highlights his impressive recent form. Attempting close to 500 passes, few can better Osman's passing accuracy of 89%. The home match against Southampton was the standout game with the midfield man recording 94% accuracy having misplaced just four of his 68 passes.
Creating 12 chances, a total only five team-mates can better; Osman continues to demonstrate his capabilities. Previously used in wide or advanced areas, Osman was always one of the team's most creative players. In addition, despite his move to a more withdrawn role, he remains a creative option within the Everton side.
Forays forward are becoming less frequent as the years catch up but that has led to a much more disciplined and well-rounded approach. Providing the link between attack and defence, Osman has finally nailed down his Everton place. So, I'll be having custard with my humble pie whilst Leon Osman is fully deserving of this call-up after years of being the nearly man.
