Mainz eventually crumbles

Posted by Susie Schaaf

As expected, a stalwart Mainz defense held up Bayern Munich for 40 minutes before the visitors broke through and ultimately cruised to victory.

Toni Kroos flicked on Thomas Mueller and the German international rounded Mainz 'keeper Christian Wetklo to slot into an empty net for his 12th Bundesliga goal this term.

Mario Mandzukic would add a brace in the second half, killing off the Oh-Fives. On 50 minutes, David Alaba would break down the left -- a give-and-go with Kroos saw the Austrian pass to Mandzukic for his 13th goal of the season. Mandzukic doubled his total on the day seven minutes later with a neat header from a Philipp Lahm cross.

Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben would both be substituted into the match on 75 minutes wit hRobben playing uncharacteristically on the left as a direct substitute for Franck Ribery. Luis Gustavo would see 10 minutes as well for Bayern as he was subbed in for Kroos. None of the trio would have an impact as the score ended 0-3.

- Bayern widens lead to 14 points

Only having given up two points away this season, die Roten take a commanding 14 point overnight lead until Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund clash at the BayArena on Sunday. A draw between those two would be nice, wouldn't it?

Odds and ends:

Mainz really did a nice job in the first half. Despite missing Adam Szalai, they still pressed. I suppose this was not surprising given their record at home.

I am all "Team Arjen", if you will. While he does have an axe to grind, skating to the dressing room and not celebrating with the away support isn't doing him any favors.

I know I've been calling for a squad rotation, but nice work all-around for Bayern's Startelf today.

Psyched to see Jan Kirchhoff in a Bayern kit next season?
