Farewell, Pato, we barely knew thee
GettyImagesAlexandre Pato's fitness prevented him from reaching peak form for MilanSo, it's official. Alexandre Pato has completed his transfer from Milan to Corinthians in a deal reportedly worth €15 million.
The 23-year-old Brazilian international will undergo a medical in the forthcoming days, before signing a four-year contract. In an open letter on the Milan website, Pato paid tribute to the Rossoneri and the fans.
"I wish to salute, but above all to thank, everyone. From the President to the many people I worked with in these unforgettable years at Milan.
"I am going to Brazil, to Corinthians, so I’ll have the opportunity to play consistently. It won't, however, be easy to forget Milan.
"I am and always will be very tied to this jersey, the club colours and all the Rossoneri fans. Above all at this moment my thoughts and my biggest thanks go to them."
It is undoubtedly a real shame to see the Brazilian leave, having shown so much early promise his career has been blighted by numerous injuries over the past 18 months. Wishing him well for the future, it is with great hope that he finally rediscovers both his fitness and form, and becomes the player many predicted he would be.
Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has spoken of his desire to see the 'Duck' one day return to the club, and despite all the frustration and false starts he would arguably be welcomed back with open arms by many should he return to Milanello in the future.
Should Milan decide to replace him in the January transfer window, who should arrive?
Unimpressed by the rumoured signing of Didier Drogba, the move makes little sense considering the conscious effort to reduce the wage bill and concentrate on youth over the last six months. Despite his undoubted ability and presence, the 34 year-old would request a high wage packet, and that would certainly be out of keeping with the new transfer strategy implemented by the club.
Additionally, with their latest bust-up seemingly set to become their last, will Roberto Mancini be prepared to allow Mario Balotelli to leave? Berlusconi has questioned the maturity of 'Super Mario' recently, and instead stated his interest in a move for preferred signing Mattia Destro from Roma. A potential El-Shaarawy-Destro front pairing has all the hallmarks of representing the kind of future painted by the club management.
Now that the move is official, are you sad to see Pato depart? Who should Milan sign as his replacement, if they decide to move in January?
