Enyimba deserve Nigeria title success - coach Kadiri Ikhana

Enyimba claimed their seventh Nigerian Premier League title on Sunday, with coach Kadiri Ikhana claiming his players deserved their success.

A 0-0 draw against Warri Wolves this weekend sealed the trophy, as it put "The People's Elephant" onto an unassailable 69 points with one game left to go.

Despite having Daniel Etor sent off in the 50th minute for punching an opponent, Enyimba held on to seal their first league title since 2010 and claim a place in next year's CAF Champions League.

"I believe we fully deserve to win this title," Ikhana told enyimbafc.net. "The players have been outstanding and on the day when we needed to keep our heads and get a result, they gave a good account of themselves.

"Throughout the season, which was very challenging, we played with belief. We knew we had a good chance of winning the league and finally we have done it. I thank God for everything."

Ikhana first took Enyimba to the domestic and continental double in 2003 before quitting at the end of the season. He then returned to the club in June 2014 and sealed the Federation Cup trophy in December.

"Everyone has worked hard this season," he added. "Leading up to this game we were under pressure but thankfully everything has worked out well for us and for our fans.

"Warri Wolves came here to get a victory, but we showed we could hold our own and control the game as well. They have given us a good fight this season but we are finally champions and that is a reflection of the character of our team.

"This is the trophy Enyimba have been trying to win since 2010 and I'm very happy that we have achieved it. Next season will offer us more challenges, but I believe my players have what it takes to continue to be dominant."

The new champions are in action next weeked at Sunshine Stars at Teslim Balogun Stadium as they seek to end their season on a high.
