Ceres, Global get AFC Cup boost with Singapore Cup dates change

Philippines Football League (PFL) outfits Ceres-Negros and Global FC have received a boost in their AFC Cup campaigns with the news that their Singapore Cup preliminary round fixtures have been pushed back until late June.

Thursday's announcement from Football Association of Singapore (FAS), who changed the original dates from the May 8 draw, will give both clubs more time to focus on the AFC Cup, where they are fighting to reach the ASEAN zonal final.

Ceres will attempt to overturn a 3-2 first leg deficit against Malaysian champions Johor Daryl Ta'zim (JDT) in a home tie on May 31, while Global are looking to pick up a victory in Singapore against Home United a day earlier after a 2-2 first leg draw.

Ceres will embark on their Singapore Cup journey against Hougang United at Hougang Stadium on June 20, three days after their PFL fixture against JP Voltes.

As for Global, they will play Geylang International at Clementi Stadium on June 21 -- three days after a league game against Ilocos United.

Meanwhile, Cambodian Premier League sides Boeung Ket Angkor and Nagaworld will play their Cup ties in May.

Boeung Ket come up against Warriors FC on May 29 at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, while Nagaworld will face Balestier Khalsa at Toa Payoh Stadium two days later.

The 2017 Singapore Cup final is scheduled for November 25 at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Thailand's Bangkok Glass are the only foreign invitees to have won the trophy, edging Tampines Rovers 1-0 in the 2010 final.
