FAS election day sees Bill Ng challenge Lim Kia Tong for president

The next chapter of Singapore football will kick off on Saturday afternoon when the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) holds the first-ever democratic election of its council.

It has been a drama-filled fortnight, marred by controversy, with allegations of impropriety over funds, culminating in key figures in the fraternity being arrested by police for questioning.

However, despite all the drama, the election will go ahead as scheduled at the Black Box Auditorium at the Singapore Sports Hub.

Team LKT, led by former FAS vice-president Lim Kia Tong and consisting several members from the previous council, have received strong support. That's after showing a willingness to step away from various policies of the most recent regime, which received considerable criticism.

Their opponents are Team Game Changers, who have expressed confidence in their prospects, despite their presidential candidate Bill Ng being one of four people arrested by police last week. He is now out on bail and is free to stand in the election.

Tampines Rovers' chairman Krishna Ramachandran, one of his prospective vice-presidents, believes their camp will head into Saturday's milestone event with every reason to be optimistic.

"I don't want to sound conceited but, based on the feedback we have got, we are very confident, also because we are driven by our commitment to a cause that hasn't wavered since day one," the Tampines Rovers chairman told The New Paper.

"We want to make very clear to all the affiliates that we remain committed to the transformation that we feel Singapore football needs.

"We are surprised by the overwhelming support from members who turned up [at Game Changers' meeting with FAS affiliates on Thursday evening]."

Both teams will be vying for votes from 44 affiliates of the FAS, which includes nine S.League clubs, of which two are currently inactive, 23 National Football League sides, and 12 other members from various interest groups.

In the first round of polling, either party must win a two-thirds vote in order to be confirmed as the new leaders of Singapore football.

Should that not be achieved after one round of voting, Team LKT and Team Game Changers only need to secure a majority vote in the subsequent rounds to emerge triumphant.
