Ong Kim Swee to honour Malaysia contract despite TMJ appointment

Datuk Ong Kim Swee says he has a contract until December and plans on honouring his commitments as national coach, despite the imminent appointment of Crown Prince of Johor as the new Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president.

Saturday's FAM Congress is due to confirm the Johor Darul Ta'zim owner, better known as TMJ, in the top job after his only rival Tan Sri Annuar Musa pulled out of the race 48 hours before the vote.

Ong, who returned to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday evening after Malaysia's 0-0 draw in a Philippines' friendly, was in a defiant mood when he spoke to ESPN FC.

"I still have a contract. It's not a matter of whether I want to stay on or not, I still have to honour my contract," Ong said.

"At the same time, I think both parties have to honour their commitments. Like I said, if the new management wants me to stay, I'll stay. If they want us to go, probably we have to look at how we can get away from our contract."

TMJ has been a vocal opponent of Ong since the former utility player took over the national job on a full-time basis in January 2016.

The Johor Royal has hinted that his ex-JDT coach Mario Gomez would take over as Malaysia head coach as part of a new era of Malaysian football.

Ong was quick to wish the 32-year-old the greatest success in his new role.

"Firstly, congratulations to Tunku Mahkota of Johor," Ong said.

"Like I've said before, whatever is the decision he makes after the Congress then I have to accept it. For now, I still have to do whatever I am doing and continue working whatever I've been assigned for."

Malaysia were due to open their 2019 AFC Asian Cup third-round qualifying campaign on Tuesday. But their match against North Korea in Pyongyang was postponed, due to security concerns.

The players will now return to their club sides, with the match now expected to be played on June 8 at a neutral venue.

"It was the right decision under the circumstances, given the political tensions surrounding the game," Malaysia full-back Matthew Davies told ESPN FC.

"It was obviously the best decision at the time. Hopefully by the time we play the game, everything has settled down and we can focus on the football."
