Ong Kim Swee 'not thinking about' FAM election ahead of Azkals clash

Malaysia take on Philippines on Wednesday night in a Manila friendly that has extra significance, due to the uncertain future of coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee.

The Football Association of Malaysia will hold its elections on Saturday, with murmurs that Ong's job is on the line once the new executive committee hierarchy takes over.

Although it could be his last game in charge, the 46-year-old is simply focused on getting a result against the Azkals.

"I have an existing contract. People can say whatever they want. As long as I am still under the same management and they want me to carry on, I will do so with honour," Ong told NST Online.

"I do not want to think about it. Let me focus and finish the match against Philippines in Manila on Wednesday. Let's see what happens during the FAM election."

The bespectacled coach will only have to concentrate on the Philippines match after Malaysia's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against North Korea on March 28 was postponed until June 8, due to strained diplomatic ties between the governments.

Malaysia warmed up for the encounter at the Rizal Memorial Stadium with a 1-0 success over PDRM FA in a friendly on Saturday, thanks to a Shahrul Saad goal.

The national team are desperate to kick off 2017 on a winning note after crashing out of the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup group stage in November.

Within his ranks, Ong has a fleet of players who could be game changers after starting the 2017 Malaysia Super League season on an excellent note.

Baddrol Bakhtiar, Khairul Helmi, Rizal Ghazali and Syazwan Zainon have all done well to maintain Kedah's unbeaten run so far, while Matthew Davies, Ahmad Hazwan Bakri and Fadhli Shas are improving with every game.

But the Harimau Malaysia won't have it easy against the Philippines, who are 37 spots above them as highest ranked team in Southeast Asia (124th).

Still powered by the Younghusband brothers James and Phil, the one-time minnows have dramatically improved after the addition of many mixed-heritage players.

Italian-born Dennis Villanueva was one of the key figures to help Global FC clinch the domestic league title, while Japan-born Hikaru Minegishi will look to continue the stellar form which made him the country's best player in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian under-22 side are preparing for their second game of the Dubai Cup on Thursday

They opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against China on Monday.
