Malaysia's Hazwan Bakri vows to keep scoring on Oceania tour

Selangor's Hazwan Bakri may be firing on all cylinders at the moment, but the in-form striker is refusing to take his good form for granted as Malaysia prepare for the first match of their Oceania tour.

The Malaysians are training in Brisbane ahead of Friday's opener against Papua-New Guinea in Port Moresby. Harimau Malaysia are in good spirits after brushing aside Timor Leste 6-0 in a two-legged Asian Cup playoff qualifier in Johor Bahru on June 2 and 6, largely thanks to Hazwan's three goals.

The 24-year-old, who struck an impressive brace in the first leg before adding a third in the reverse fixture, ended a four-year duck with the national team since last scoring on his debut against Sri Lanka in 2012.

And Hazwan, who has just recovered from a lengthy injury layoff, isn't about to get complacent.

"It's too early for me to be satisfied with my performance and I know I have yet to reach my full potential," he told ESPN FC.

"I still have a lot of work to put in to justify my place in the team."

The 173rd ranked Malaysians, who will play in the Asian Cup final round qualifiers next year, will also face New Caledonia on June 22 and Fiji on June 26.

"We want to do well and it will be three tough matches, despite our opponents ranked lower than us. As for me, the goals will come if I put myself in the right place so that will be the mission," said the Red Giants' striker, who is also looking to take this form into club colours when Malaysian domestic football resumes in July.

"I want to help Selangor chase the title and me being fit again would certainly benefit the team upfront. But for now, I am focused on helping the national team win all our games on tour," added Hazwan, who could be the country's main goal-getter ahead of the biennial Suzuki Cup in November.

For Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) winger S. Chanturu, playing for the national side could also translate to more first team action with the MSL table toppers.

"If I play well for the country, the chances of me playing more for JDT will be brighter. So this Australian tour could be the stage for me to prove myself to get more playing time, and I intend to seize the opportunity if I am selected," said Chanturu, who scored Malaysia's third goal against Timor Leste in the second-leg.

Malaysia fly to Papua-New Guinea from their Queensland training base on Thursday and will also face New Caledonia (June 22) and Fiji (June 26) on the tour.
