Singapore's Olympic qualification hopes in tatters after losing to China

Singapore's chances of advancing to next year's Asian qualifying tournament for the Rio Olympic Games look bleak after suffering a 5-0 defeat to China in their second match of AFC U23 Championship qualification in Laos on Sunday.

This follows a 0-0 draw with the host nation on Friday. Their third and final game will be against Mongolia on Tuesday.

Ten group winners and the five best second-placed teams will join hosts Qatar at in the 16-team AFC U23 Championship 2016 in January.

Richard Bok's Singapore were under pressure from the start at the National Sports Complex Stadium in Vientiane.

Li Yuanyi opened the scoring after two minutes before Feng Gang made it 2-0 six minutes before the break in this Group J game.

A penalty from Xu Xin extended the advantage eight minutes into the second half before Zang Yifeng increased the lead to 4-0 on 66 minutes. The fifth and final goal came from Wu Xinghan after 79 minutes.

In the other Group J game on Sunday, Laos thrashed Mongolia 7-0. The Chinese defeated the Mongolians 5-0 on Friday which means they have a plus 12 goal difference.

Singapore will need to rack up a huge score against Mongolia on Tuesday and hope that China beat Laos soundly to have any chance of advancing to January's tournament in Qatar.
