Brazil manager Tite: Corrupt CBF officials should be punished

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's national football coach said on Monday that anyone at the Brazilian Football Confederation found guilty of corruption should be punished.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Adenor Leonardo Bacchi -- known universally as Tite -- was asked about ongoing corruption investigations of the CBF.

Tite said his work is limited to coaching.

"That is the contribution I can give," he said. "Those parallel situations that happen, not only in football but in our society, those responsible are the ones that have to pay."

Current CBF President Marco Polo Del Nero is wanted by United States prosecutors on racketeering, fraud and other charges. He hired Tite five months ago.

His predecessor, Jose Maria Marin, has been extradited to the U.S. and awaits trial on corruption charges.

Ricardo Teixeira, the president before Marin, has also been indicted by U.S. authorities. Neither Teixeira nor Del Nero has been extradited.

Brazil has an extradition treaty with the United States, but seldom extradites its own nationals.

The new coach is in a tough spot, but said previously that Del Nero agreed not to interfere with his decisions.

Tite signed a petition in 2015 asking for Del Nero's removal.

Corruption in Brazilian football has been rumored for decades, but came to widespread attention when high-ranking football officials were arrested in Switzerland in 2015 in raids at a five-star hotel.
